Pureed Foods?
First of all, let me say a big THANK YOU to all of you all that posted to my last message ("10 days post-op...Depressed). It really did get me through a hard time by reading all of the encouraging words.
Now for my next question. Next week I begin the "Pureed Foods" phase for 2 more weeks. I'm excited about expanding my eating options, but I'm a little turned off by "blending my food to smooth consistancy". Another option they gave was buying baby foods....blah.
Does anyone have any good suggestions to help me "enjoy" this portion of my recovery.
(FYI--I had my two week check up today. Doc says everything looks great. I'm down 17 lbs since morning of surgery! )
Thanks again!
Jennifer
Jennifer, I posted this response yesterday to another question but it fits here as well:
had my surgery on the 19th and so far I have eaten I am on pureed)
Carb control yogurt
scrambled eggs
8 oz protein and milk drinks
canned refried beans
canned peas - mashed
Campbells bean with bacon soup - mashed with underwood deviled ham added (this was very good)
Canned Salmon - thinned with lowfat Cream cheese
Canned chicken breast pureed in blender
Mashed potatoes
SF applesauce
mashed bananas
Cream of Wheat with half scoop of Chocolate carmel protein powder
Some baby food prunes
Some of the middle of family's lasagna (mostly the ricotta cheese part)
Water, Crystal light no caf ice tea, Tropicana SF Orangeade
No problems so far but I find that it is hard to take my first drink in the morning - my stomach feels weird.
Most of the above was eaten in 1/8 to 1/4 cup portions, chewed very well and strained thru my teeth to make sure it is small and usually eaten slowly (although I sometimes catch myself eating fast)
Jennifer,
I've been on pureed foods since Sunday and it's not so bad. I refuse to puree anything that isn't normally pureed. With that said, I've found plenty of options...here are a few of my favorites.
Cheese and potato soup
low fat yogurt
cottage cheese
low fat refried beans (homemade)
extreme smoothie, praline cream
I eat so little that I can't imagine having tried more that this yet.
Enjoy!
Maria
Hi Jennifer,
It actually isn't too bad. Like some of the posters stated, find foods that already somewhat pureed. Remember protein FIRST. I usually eat:
1 - fat free vegetarian refried beans w/ shredded cheese
2 - lentil bean soup (i blend in a blender..not bad)
3 - Scrambled egg beaters (2 tablespoons/1/2 egg) w/ shredded cheese
4 - banana smoothie: crushed ice, water, lactaid milk (1/2 cup or less), scoop of any protein powder flavored or unflavored, 1 drop of pure vanilla extract, cinammon, nutmeg, 1 Splenda. This by far is my favorite! It was the first thing I actually ate and yummy!
5 - I know a big no no, but since cold bothers my tummy first thing in am, I drink a cup of coffee w/ powdered cream/sweet -n-low for sweet taste
Well, so far, that's about it. I have chewed a couple of different foods and then spit it out...felt good to do that. I need to venture into more pureed foods, but this has made me happy for a week so far
Good Luck!

I am in the pureed/soft food realm right now. The refried beans and cheese with a bi tof taco sauce has been very enjoyable for hot food. I made chili with ground turkey, beans and canned tomatoes and ran it thorough a food processor. I call it chili bisque! Melt some cheddar on top for more protein.
One suggestion I saw that I am going to try this weekend is ricotta cheese mixed with spaghetti sauce.
My lunch is often tuna fish with just a little mayo mixed in or cottage cheese and jello. I have eaten cheese soup out in Mexican restaurants.
Congrats to everyone!
