Dehydration, anyone?

Oh my goodness, what a time I've had. After being sick off and on for 6 days, I finally went to the ER because I was so weak, and couldn't even get 8 ounces of water down last Wednesday. They ended up keeping me in the hospital because I was severely dehydrated. I was there 3 nights (which is longer than I was in for my surgery!!). The first few days, I was NPO (no food/drink), and then I graduated to clear liquids again, which went fine! Then the day I was going home, they gave me full liquids, which also went down fine. So I got home about 10 pm on Saturday night. I didn't even stay up to watch the New Years stuff... for the first time ever! Then, yesterday, I started getting sick again all day, and with nearly everything I ate or drank. The only thing I could keep down was broth. Today seems to be going good so far - I am back on just clear liquids again. I can't even take my vitamins because they make me ill. My doctor thinks I might need to get a dilation done, either just after the pouch, or further down where it joins to the old stomach. He wouldn't do it while I was in the hospital because it was too close to my surgery - it has to be at least a month or major damage can happen. So, I guess I'm going to call his office tomorrow and see if he'll set me up for a scope this week. I'm afraid to try to advance my diet again, and of course, I'm getting weak again. I was begging to leave the hospital Saturday night and now I just wish I had stayed, even though it was so boring. The IV fluid was working well. It seems that, with this surgery, if you get dehydrated, there is no turning back without medical intervention. You can't digest anything if you don't have enough water in your system. I know I won't let it go 6 days again. I was lucky that my kidneys didn't shut down. Anyone else having trouble swallowing? It's weird, but I was doing GREAT until I got the stupid stomach virus, and I think all of the vomiting caused my plumbing to narrow or something. The doctor said it could be swollen even because of the stitches still healing. Sorry about the novel... just needed to share! Doreen 327.5 / 301

Doreen, I'm so sorry to hear about your problems. Glad they rehydrated you and there was no kidney damage. Be careful. I hope that your pouch is just irritated by the virus and things will settle down again for you soon. We're here if you need to vent..now go sip...sip...sip! xo sunny

Hi, Doreen, I am very sorry you are having problems. I had my lap RNY on the 29th and came home on the 31st, and, so far, so good. I get this gassy feeling, though, then I actually burp DELICATELY. Can you imagine? I just LOVE the sugar-free popsicles. Have you tried sucking on those? They melt very nicely and taste good. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!! HUG, Pat

I love sugar-free popsicles too. Two of them give you 2.5 ounces of fluids. Don't forget to count them in your fluid total. I hope things start going better for you soon!!
