Funky Taste in Mouth???
Hi everyone! I've been reading the posts here now and then, but have not posted until today. I had my LAP RNY on 12/20/05.
Does anyone else have an incredibly funky taste in your mouth ALL THE TIME????? I do, and was told it was normal and would go away. Only thing is it makes everything I eat taste icky. I'm having a hard time getting in my protein and stuff because of it. Brushing my teeth/tongue helps - for about 5 minutes. I was told NOT to chew gum because it quenches thirst (keeps you from getting your fluids in) and you could accidentally swallow it and clog your stoma (definately don't wanna go there!)
Is anyone else nauseated most of the day? Not to the point of actually but just enough to make you not want to eat/drink anything at all? I sure hope this is a passing phase (both - the taste and the nausea) because I'm beginning to get a little bit bummed and discouraged.

I had my surgery on the 12th and have gone through the same thing. I did find that a sugar free mint would help. My mouth was so dry that I would get the dry heaves. I would suck on the mint for a second or two and then put it in a cup. It took me several hours to use up that mint. Very strong taste...I would also several times during the day brush with a dry toothbru**** seemed to help. It will go away mine is getting better every day.

Hi Beth,
I had this problem BIG time (I had RNY on 12/12 ) but didn't come up with any solutions except that I found water the most palatable. It was a temporary problem however! For some reason everything tasted really icky sweet and even metallic. Drinking water was like drinking hummingbird food- even that tasted sugary. My own saliva tasted gross. It made things tough. Even my sense of smell was way out of wack, I was like a bloodhound, detecting odors from other rooms! When I went to my post-op visit they blamed it on the Flagyl I was on for 10 days (an antibiotic). But the taste problem did start to improve before the 10 day course of the drug was even over, so I think it was just the surgery too. I was at about 10-11 days from surgery when it went away.
My best to you!
