Sleeping issues

It has been 1 week today since my lap RNY. I am unable to lie down on my side, it is very uncomfortable. I do not have pain, I just have soreness. However, I only sleep MAX of 5 hours because I cannot get comfortable, I only get the 5 hours thanks to Lor-tab liquid (the second dose of the night). I feel better every day, I walk more, I move around, everything else is really good. It is just this sleeping problem. Any advice on the ETA of a whole night's sleep. Thanks

Robin, Someone told me that the best thing post-op is a recliner. I don't have one but find myself sleeping propped up on the couch and then getting up and going to bed. My doctor recommended the Lor-tab, also. It makes me loopy but not sleepy. Of course, it's 4am central and I'm wide awake. Chauncine

Robin, at about 9 days post op I was able to sleep on my side in my bed. Before that I was in a recliner. I was still up in the middle of the night, but not because of discomfort. Hang in there. You're almost there! Sherry 260/243.5

I didn't have a recliner to use, so I propped myself up in bed on like 4 pillows to try to get as comfortable as possible. It also helped to have a pillow under my forearm. I am now 3 weeks post op, and can very comfortably sleep on either side. It was probably at 2 weeks that it finally didn't hurt to sleep on the left side, although it was still hard to sleep on the right. My big problem was how thirsty I got at night, then after taking a drink or two, couldn't lie down until the fluid was in my pouch completely, so I would end up dozing off while sitting up in bed! Hang in there, you should be able to slowly sleep on your left side for short amounts of time!

Hi Robin, I was able to sleep fine, but I couldn't lay on my side for about the first week. I couldn't stay in that position for too long though. The muscle healing pain has begun to worsen a bit for me, so I'm not able to lay on my left side again (talked to the dr. and he said it's normal). One suggestion is to make sure you get your protein. Protein helps the muscles heal faster so you can lay on your side! Good luck!

I know exactly how you feel! I had my surgery on the 14th and before I found this website I thought Jeeesh am I the only one that can't sleep after this surgery. B/4 surgery I only slept on my stomach so to find out that wouldn't be possible was upsetting. The first week I had back neck pains and but pains I guess the recliner was making a inprint on my tush. I found it was easier to just stay awake and walk around. The Lor-tab didn't do anything for me in the hospital or even now if I take it at night if I'm feeling uncomfortable it still doesn't work. Now I'm a week 1/2 out and I can sleep on my side and as long as I have a pillow under my left side and I can sleep on my stomach(it's awesome). Now I don't want to get out of bed, I think I'm catching up on the lack of sleep I got right after surgery. But point is it'll get better! Take care

Robin, I know the feeings you are going throug. I am three days post op, and I came home from the hospital last night. Well, at some point while I was sleep I rolled over on my left side. I woke suddenly in the middle of the night becasue I had to use the bathroom. I almost didnt make it, I hurt so bad. Now, I have this gas pain issue going on. I feel all kinds of bubbly stuff going on in my stomach, I am belching, and I even have small hiccups. I have taken my lortab only once today, as I do not want to become dependat on it. But, as the night is winding down for me I can see myself making sure that I take my meds. Best of luck to you, I hope all continues to go well. Melissa

Melissa, Take your Lor-tab. My doc encouraged mw to take as much as was allowed, said it would make me move around more, pass the gas more and heal faster. I am 11 days post -op,,,the burping, bubbling thing stoped at about day 6 for me..if I eat too fast or too much it comes back though. I'm still fine tuning what I can eat. Feel better. sunny
