Another pain in the middle question
I am mostly a lurker but I have been registered since early 2004, I think. I come to this site at least 3-4 times a day and most of the time my questions are answered just by reading others' posts. I am sure this has been asked over and over but this time its ME that hurt and I need you guys help.
I am 13 months post op lap RNY. I have lost 83 pounds with absolutely no complications. Thank God. BUT...Friday at work we had ordered Chinese(chung tu beef), I had just started eating making sure I still chew, chew, chew. I was eating mostly the beef with some carrots and water chestnuts. About 3-4 minutes in to the meal I started getting a grabbing, gnawing pain (spasms) about an inch above my belly button. I had this pain once before when I ate McD's chicken nuggets and it lasted about an hour then I was fine. On Friday I had to finally leave work after about an hour and the pain continued for 11 more hours and stopped just as suddenly as it had started. I was not nauseous, and could drink water (small amounts, when you hurt like that--about a 7 on the pain scale--you don't want much going in there). I did call the dr. he of course said "go to the emergency room if it is super bad" or we will get you in with a gastroenterologist on monday.
Anyway have any of you had this and could you shed some lite on it for me. Sorry such a long post, but this is the short version.
It could be a reaction to MSG. Mono Sodium Glutamate. A chemical preservative, common in fast foods and especially in Chinese food. It is common for some people to have alergic reactions to MSG.
I don't "dump", but I have read that dumping syndrome can come from high-fat content of food, as well as from high-sugar contents. Perhaps the fat content is too high and is causing you to dump.?

Hi Rita
I dont know what caused it but I do know it has happen to me twice. The first time I ended up in ER where they gave me mucsle relaxers and IV fluids ,they took x-rays and said I was full, they gave me a enema but the muscle relaxer helped a lot. Second time I went to bed and just layed there till it stopped. Im not sure what caused it but do not ever want it to happen again . They did recommend reglan but i havent tried it.
Hello Rita,
I had a pain in my tummy about two weeks ago.
It lasted three days then all up a sudden it stopped
a few days before my one year check up. I told
the doctor and he just told me that if I have
diarrhea and I'm throwing up to call him. It was
real bad after I ate and like you I couldn't stand
up straight.
Take care and please come out of lurking mode
more often. We don't bite.
((((Hugs))))

Thanks Diana, you guys are just sooo good I don't need to post. But you know it sure helps to have someone say "I've had that too". I didn't call my PCP today because I know what it will be....Test this, Test that and end up with "mmmmm, not sure what caused that!" "Heres another pill to take just in case" Thats what I had this surgery for to get away from all the pills. I'm very picky what I put in it now. except for some bad chinese food.
