Change of life??
I did not keep my mouth shut and she admits she was wrong but my husband said let it go as she cooked us a nice christmas dinner and we did say we would pay for the dinner as she don't have much money but we took her to the store and it only cost around $40.00 for everything for the dinner, not $100.00 but like you said she won't be around much longer.

Donna,
I haven't posted here in a long time but this one really needed my response.
I think you are wrong. To give a check to your MIL for Christmas is saying here's something I didn't want to be bothered shopping or getting you something personal. I'm sorry but I lost my boyfriends Mom last year and I would have loved to bought her something personal for Christmas if she was around. Checks/Gift Cards/Money are given to young teenages but for a MIL a personal gift could help with your relationship with her. Anyways, just my thoughts. Just an extra note at 80 years old it could have slipped her mind and just put the check in I guess I would have had questioned without blaming her what happened or at least have your husband asked what happened.

She likes the money, what can I say. She likes to buy her own things. I'm not going to start buying her things she don't need.
The matter is cleared up and closed. We talked it out and she admitted she was wrong. She did not destroy the check when she found it but put it in with her other check to be deposited in the bank. We are not asking for a dime of it back
It could have slipped her mind but you have to know my mother in-law to understand why I got upset over it.
