sugar alcohol
I found a protein bar that I really like but I'm worried about the sugar alcohol in it. It has 180 calories, 3 net carbs and 19 grams of protein, but has 11 grams of sugar alcohol. The protein bar is called PURE PROTEIN Country Blueberry Pie. Best one I've had so far.
What does everyone's dietician say about sugar alcohol. Mine says to avoid it! I never really asked why though. Does anyone know?
My dietician said to avoid them...they are very much like sugar and can cause dumping. I know everytime I have tried something with a small amount of sugar alcohols that I dump and feel really awful for quite a while. As for the scientific reason....sorry I don't know. I know that they are bad for you. Best of luck.

On the OFF board (Over Fifty Forum) we have had many conversations recently on sugar alcohols and how they can affect us. Most of us can not tolerate those products that have the "itols" endings. These are the sugar alcohols that are put into many of those foods that do taste so very good, but they are not good for us. Many dump if products have the sugar alcohols in them. I read my labels and try to stay away from foods that have more than 8 grms sugar. I look for words that have the "itol" after them and if they are around I avoid the product. I chose not to dump, I have dumped once back in February on a small glass of OJ and it was a horrible experience.
Hopefully your nutritionist can give you some more complete guidance on the sugar alcohol problems life can give us.

I haven't had any problems with dumping after eating something with sugar alcohol in it. In fact, I have never really "dumped". The only thing that I noticed is once I had a few bites of my husband's ice cream (I know, bad girl!) and I got nauseated and had some abdominal cramps.
As for gas, I haven't noticed more after eating protein bars. I think in general though I have been more gassy since having the surgery.
