GERD and a scratchy throat!
I had my roux en y procedure performed December 28, 2004. My stomach and pouch are stapled and seperated. For the past week, I've been experiencing this burning sensation in the back of my throat. It comes and goes. It doesn't matter if I eat or not. It's really quite annoying! I think that it's GERD. The other weird thing is my throat is scratchy and a bit irritated. I went to see my primary care physician and he prescribed me Prevacid. Meanwhile, I'm taking Mylanta until the Prevacid begins working (it may take a week or so I was told). Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I was up last night worrying about this.
I had very bad GERD before surgery for many years. It caused my voice to become scratchy, hoarse, and made me feel like I had something stuck in my throat which I had to clear often all day. Very annoying and I sounded terrible. After surgery I was taken off my 24 hour time release capsule and told not to take anything. However my GERD was still very bad and my voice problems came again. So I was put on the little purple pill and went to see my ENT to have my throat scoped. (again to make sure it was GERD and not something else) I wanted to make sure that the hoarseness and "stuck" feeling was from the GERD and not from some other problem. So my throat is ok, the purple pill helps and I will continue this. Most of the acid pumps are in the section of the stomach that gets cut away. My doctor explained that some people have many acid pumps in the "cardiac" section of the stomach. This is me and that is why after WLS I still have GERD.
