Whats everyone Eating???????
Hey there Megan,
I had my surgery on 12/17/04 and to date I have lost 49 lbs. On a typical day I have a protein shake in the morning. I use the Slim Fast Optima Smoothies. They are 190 cal. and 12 gr. prot, around 8:30-9AM then about 11 I have Quaker Q-smart bar which is 160 cal and 10 gr. prot. I then have a packet of Nutrition for women oatmeal by Quaker, which is 160 cal. and 6 gr. prot, around noon. The most protein in oatmeal. I then eat a Smart Ones from Weigh****chers at about 3 PM. 200 cal. and about 26 gr. prot (the roast beef and broccoli and cauliflower) I can eat the whole thing 9 ounces in about 30 minutes, but the veggies are really mushy so they go down good and the meat is tender. I then eat again about 6-7PM. I have another Smart Ones or some shrimp. I am a firm believer in sticking with what works. I do have some baked tortillas with salsa in the evenings. I know I shouldn't, but I miss the crunch. I sometimes have them with dip made with low fat sour cream. YUMMMY! I have been unable to exercise with my back problems, which have turned out to be hip problems (one hip is significantly higher than the other) and it causes me extreme pain. I hope to be able to exercise some day. I do walk as much as I am physically able to do each day. It aint much. Good luck to you.

Goodness...I don't think there is much I haven't tried! I'm a very adventurous post-op.
Meat wise - Chicken (canned, grilled, crockpot and buffalo), beef (ground, steak, shredded), shrimp, salmon and tuna.
Fruit - Strawberries, watermelon, honeydew, grapes and oranges. Oranges are tough...
Veggies - bean sprouts, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, zuccini, squash, bell peppers, carrots, pickled beets and a smidgen of lettuce (the firmer part).
Fast food - I've had a jr. whopper (hold the lettuce, onion and the bun), the fajita roll ups at McDonalds (hold the tortilla), pintos and cheese & a soft taco from Taco Bell.
I've also eat sashimi and loved every second of it!
Just try new things one at a time, take it slow and let your body be the judge. I can eat medium rare steak, but when I had carne asada today it must've been too dry because it would not go through and I ended up . It's just a trial and error thing...
Good luck!
Jen
Hi Megan:
I am nine weeks postop today. I hated the protein shakes also, but got very weak when I stopped taking them at about four weeks. I finally found one I actually enjoy. Pro Blend 55 Mocha Cappuccino which I got from Vitalady.com. I mix 1-1/4 scoops with a teaspoon of instant decaf coffee in warm water in the morning for a 30 gram start for the day. I also found Isopure in the bottle at GNC (Blue Raspberry) which has 40 grams of protein. Since we can only metabolize 30 grams at a time, I split one bottle over two days. This gives me another 20 grams and splits the cost of the Isopure. I also use Any Whey non flavored protein mix to add to other foods, such as chili, yogurt, meat loaf, etc. It boosts the protein by about 10 grams when 1/2 scoop is added. That totals at least 60 grams from supplements and when I add my meals I usually get anywhere from 80 to 100 grams per day. I also use Elite Gourmet Vanilla from bariatriceating.com to flavor other drinks. My favorite is two strawberrys, one scoop of vanilla, Crystal Lite Orange and ice in a blender. Be sure to pulse the blender in order to not whip up the protein mix. It's pretty tasty for about 22 grams of protein. As I said, I am nine weeks and lost 60 pounds as of today.
Don't give up, keep trying new things.

I was having a lot of problem with protein too at first. I even ordered samples of various protein drinks from Vidalady.com. I have found a protein powder that I like though. It is at Hi-Health. I live in Arizona and I don't know if Hi-Health is nationwide. Anyway, its called X-RATED and one scoop has 18 grms of protein, so I put in a scoop and a half at a time. Our bodies can absorb about that much at a time. Anyway, I put two packets of Equal and a little some fresh fruit in it and blend it with water. It takes real good -- like a shake. I keep a hand-blender at work and at home. Sometimes I put 1/2 of a banana in the drink and sometimes 2-3 strawberries or a small handful of frozen rasberries, blueberries, cherries. The fruit helps with my caloric intake too because I'm not eating that much regular food. I have about 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, or 1/2 oatmeal, or 1/2 chili, for lunch and dinner and that's it. Oh ya, a couple times I was able to eat a hot dog if I chewed it a lot and ate it very, very, very slowly. I have upped my protein shakes to 3 a day and am now getting 90-100 grms of protein a day. I walk one to one and a half hours a night. I'm still working on getting all my liquid in a day -- but that too will come in time. I have lost between 50-55 pounds so far (my scale isn't very accurate). I don't worry about the scale that much, I just concentrate on doing everything I'm suppose to do everyday, and have faith that it will come off eventually. I look at it like "I used to live to eat" and now "I eat to live." Anyway, that's my new philosophy. What about you? What have you learned and what is your day like?
