Burping Question?

I've been having problems since my surgery. I had bleeding in my drainage tube, and then I had a leak and got an infection. I'm not getting in the proper amt of water or protean. The problem is, when I eat or drink anything I get a burning in my chest. I take small sips and chew my food well. After a minute I have a lot of small burps till I feel better. Anyone else have this? I can go all day without wanting to eat or drink anything. Liz (EdeCar) 12/03/04 eight weeks today and only 35lb down.

Liz, try some PepcidAC. Did you have Lap Band surgery? What drainage tube? Anyway, try some Pepcid AC, before each meal, 2 times per day, CHEWABLE... it will help. Vera 12/20/04 -35 343/308/? LAP RNY Proximal

I think you may be on to something. My friend gave me some of her Prevacid last night. She thinks I may have too much Acid. I had Lap RNY. Our surgeon gives us a drainage tube. It collects some of the liquid puss. It is also used to see if we have a leak. We drink a juice with die in it. Then we watch the tube. If it collects in the tube we know we have a leak. Liz (EdeCar)

I agree about the antacid. I was on Prilosec for a month, and I'm now on Zantac (twice a day) and I think my doctor does at least 6 months on it. I think it's great you don't want to eat anything -- I'm a little hungry all the time!! Drinking is something else, though. If you can get the reflux under control, if that is what it is, then you can drink the water you need. Also, do you think you might be swallowing air when you eat? The burping sounds like it. ~~Leslie 238/204/138 (almost under 200!!)

You know I never had this problem before surgery, so I did not know the symptoms. I'm going to start Prevacid. My friend suggested it last night. My surgeon gave me a prescription when I left the hospital and I forgot about it. I was waking up last night with acid reflux in my thought. Its funny how it could be such a simple problem and you just don't know what to do. I feel like I have some new hope. I even started walking last night. Thank you Liz (EdeCar)

I found out in the hospital that when I was drinking I always took a gulp of air before the drink reached my mouth. I had to learn and quickly that I do not open my mouth until the drink is on my lips. I also became aware of my breathing when I was eating. I try and exhale before a fork or spoon enter my mouth. I too have some burps, but this is a way my pouch tells me it is full, enough, no more for now. I also had to tell my doctors that I was having GERD again even when they felt I could not. The doctor put me on a medication and it is helping, but my vocal cords are still hoarse. I will ask them if I can take more of the medication. Remember, the doctors are there for us, we paid them for their help and they want us to be successful. Give them a call and another call if things don't turn around for you. Monica

Thanks for your response. Sorry to ask, but what is GURD? Liz (EdeCar)

It's another term for reflux. I don't know what the letters stand for exactly, though! That's what the Prevacid, etc., will take care of. ~~ Leslie One interesting thing to add ... I said before that I haven't had GERD since I started using the CPAP machine, but in fact when I had the endoscopy before surgery, my espophagus was very inflamed! So evidently I did still have it, but the air kept it down enough so I wasn't even aware of having it, but of course I still got inflamed! So I guess I should have been on my medicine all along! L.

Sorry to hear about your problems since surgery. I hope all is better with the leak now. I wanted to let you know that I use Pepcid Complete, chewable tablets 2 times a day, AM and PM, this keeps me from having the kinda heartburn and reflux issues. I like the chewable because I know they are starting right away, instead of having to dissolve, which most pills or caps are time release. Just some food for thought. Oh, I have also got information from my doctor on Juice Plus, which is a whole food vitiman, this will give me my fruits and veggies that I really need that I am not getting in the small portions I get and will allow me not to worry about them and just worry about my protein. There is a lot to the vitamins that I had no idea about until recently. I do have some problems with the first meal of the day, sometimes I just can't eat anything, so I am still on my protein shake. It gives me 20g per serving, and I can have it in water or skim milk. Just an FYI. Happy Losing to You!!
