4 wks post-op & only 23 lbs lost...
Wow! Thanks everyone for your responses and thoughts. The great thing about this surgery is that you can't cheat. Your tool is here today, tomorrow, and the day after too! So I have no choice but to keep plugging along. I have been lucky and have not had any complications after surgery. No ill feeling, no vomiting, no nausea, no diarrhea, no constipation, no anything. According to my dietary guidelines I am allowed to have hamburger and pizza, which are not considered junk by my group's dietician. Junk would be candy, cake, chips, ice cream, breads, rice, white potato etc. Thanks again
It seems to me that for those of you who can't or don't anything but protein may be were instructed to do so,or maybe you choose not to, but per my doc and dieticians literature, they encouraged yogurt, cheese w/pizza sauce, and even hamburger meat if your pouch can tolerate it. I personally think that it is not "junk food" as Kris M stated. I feel that we should not start "comparing" because other can eat what some cannot or choose not to eat. We will lose differently, as our pouches tolerate differently. My doc told me that some of us will lose weight while others lose inches. I weigh 259 lbs but my 20's are way too big (falling off). I have lost only 25 lbs. Some will still be in a size 20 and weigh less than I do, so we cannot start comparing without putting in all of the facts.. Just wanted to say that....
Hi Kim:
Which Dr did you use?
I hope this helps everyone. My surgical documentation shows that average weight loss results for roux-en-Y gastric bypass are 33% of excess weight in the first 3 months, 65% in 12 months, and at least 75% after 18 months. So the more excess weight you have, the more pounds you will probably lose in a given time. For example, if you need to lose 200 pounds, your loss at 3 months would be approximately 66 pounds. If you need to lose 100 pounds, it would be 33 pounds (yep, that's for THREE months). One loss in pounds is double yet the percentage is exactly the same.
Not to mention how many mins a day we walk etc
Thanks Alisa, Vhappy T, Fran, Rita, Phyllis, Kesha, Becky and Dawny Girl, for all your encouragement and support. I do choose protein over carbs 95% of the time. I am not a protein lover so this is a struggle and boring too. I will persevere! Vhappt ~ your percentages make sense and really helped me get this into perspective, thanks again! Good luck to you all. These boards are great support. Kris
I think the same is true for alot of us especially if we arent avoiding the carbs. I had surgery on 12/27 and have lost only 23lbs. I am reading Susan Leachs book, Before and After. She says that if you continue to increase your protein and fluids but stay away from the carbs that you will see a substantial increase in your weight loss. I find the no carb. approach very difficult since I am a carb lover. Leave the bun, pizza and simple carbs and opt for the complex carbs instead and I think we will see a substantial improvement. Let me know how it goes.

We can do this. It gets easier day by day. Someone asked how I get in my protein and water. I drink one sometime two protein drinks a day usually one in the morning and one at night if needed. These protein drinks are 32 grams of protein each. I use the Carb Countdown fat free milk and American Whey Protein. I eat the rest of my protein. I usually eat cottage cheese, poached egg, mozzarella cheese stick for snack sometimes, refried beans, chicken, tuna, scallops and salmon. I have been lucky to be able to tolerate these foods. I did go through a few days where I threw everything up but I'm doing much better now. I don't tolerate water too well so I drink SF decaf tea all day long. I fill up a 32 oz countainer sometimes 3 or possibly 4 times a day and manage to get through it somehow. Good luck we can all do this. I'm personally getting tired of some of the food selections and continue to look for new ways to add protein but eat some good food.
