4 wks post-op & only 23 lbs lost...
I weighed 243 pre-op and am now 220 exactly 4 weeks out. Go****hought this would go a little faster. My intake is drastically less than before surgery. I read other profiles and am amazed at how fast others are losing. My slow loss is discouraging. A friend I am emailing with is 6 weeks out a she has lost 50 lbs! Has anyone out there experienced a slow loss like mine? Also I have experienced difficulty with food passing through to my stomach if it is not chewed really well or if I eat too fast - this I expected, but I am surprised at the amount I can eat. A whole cup of yogurt is no problem, a slice of pizza (no crust) is fine, half a burger with only 1 side of the bun again no problem. Is this normal??? Yikes...thanks for your help!
Same here as far as the amount of food that you can eat. I can consume the roughly the same quantity although i have to eat very slowly over about 20 minutes. I too have only lost about 25 lbs and today is my 1 month anniversary. I have a question. Are you a tall person or usually athletically built? Do you think that has something to do with it?
Hi Dawny,
Thanks for your reply, I had lap RNY on 12/20/04 and am 5 ft. 6.5 inches tall. I know that the more you have to lose the faster you lose it, but come on, 23lbs in 4 weeks seems slow, especially compared to others' lbs loss. I am trying to remain optimistic!!! I am going down! What reasons did your Dr. state for preferring the open to the lap rny?
I know exactly how you feel. My doc preferred the Open procedure because I had gallbladder disease pre-op and she said that she would have to make too many "holes" to do both laparoscopically. I so desperately wanted lap though. My scar is better than I thougt it would be though I have to admit. My height is about the same as yours too, and have a large muscle mass to my body anyway. When I weighed 160 lbs it actually looked like 145 to other people (whew! that was back in the day) I so want the scale to say that i have lost 45 lbs like some! But, I'll take the 25 though.
I've lost 42 lbs and I'm a month post op. I am scared to death to try anything like you are eating though. I only eat protein and no junk. Just because you can eat it doesn't necessarily make it ok. I guess I don't want to know if I can eat a slice of pizza, half hamburger or any sugars. If I know I can eat it I'm sure I will. Just some thought. I only eat 2 - 3 ozs at each meal. I eat three meals a day and have 2 small snacks. I have at least 80 grams of protein, 100 ounces of waters and try to keep my carbs around 30. I'm not saying your doing anything wrong just trying to tell you what has worked for me. You didn't have this surgery so you could eat that junk food so maybe try to eat a little smarter and even though you can eat that stuff don't do it.
Hi, i'm 4 weeks (1 month tomorrow), but preop i weighted 248. I'm like the person before i'm a little scared to eat some of the things you guys are eating. (and i'm not saying it's right or wrong) but i can't eat alot. this weekend i tryed shrimp, and i was only able to eat 2 grilled shrimp and i was full. I usually eat 3 time a day and i find it very hard to get my protein in, but i'm still trying. And i've lost 35lbs!

Don't get discouraged.... I'm 5 wks post op and my loss is 25lbs. Actually a slow loss is the best. You will be more likely to keep it off and your body will adapt better to the loss. Too, you must remember that those who weigh more lose faster at first. Hang in there and just keep on doing all the right things.
This question is for Becki Heffner. How do you get in 80 gms of protein a day and 100 oz. of water?
I had Lap RNY on 12/27/04 and have only lost 16 pounds as of today. I too am feeling pretty discouraged. Preop I was 220 @ 5'2". I can hardly get one protein shake in a day.
Any help would be appreciated.
Rita
Hi Rita,
I am not answering for Becki, because I don't get in as much water as her, but it is a lot easier to get the water in once you get ok'd to move on to regular foods, because you can eat your protein instead of drinking it. I used to have to do 2 protein drinks per day and now only have to do 1 or only 1/2 if I do the protein correctly. I am having a problem with certain real veggies. I also feel full after only 1 1/2 ozs. of meat and then can't fit anything else in. I have fruit or veggies for snack. I am a shorty like you, 4ft 11 in, I started at 224. I have lost 33 lbs. as of Saturday. Good luck and I think you are doing great!

We can do this. It gets easier day by day. Someone asked how I get in my protein and water. I drink one sometime two protein drinks a day usually one in the morning and one at night if needed. These protein drinks are 32 grams of protein each. I use the Carb Countdown fat free milk and American Whey Protein. I eat the rest of my protein. I usually eat cottage cheese, poached egg, mozzarella cheese stick for snack sometimes, refried beans, chicken, tuna, scallops and salmon. I have been lucky to be able to tolerate these foods. I did go through a few days where I threw everything up but I'm doing much better now. I don't tolerate water too well so I drink SF decaf tea all day long. I fill up a 32 oz countainer sometimes 3 or possibly 4 times a day and manage to get through it somehow. Good luck we can all do this. I'm personally getting tired of some of the food selections and continue to look for new ways to add protein but eat some good food.
