Trouble with taste buds

I had my surgery on 12/28 and came home 12/30. I woke up New Year's day and my taste buds had changed. Nothing tasted the same and the liquids I had no problem drinking became foreign and all of a sudden tasted terrible! Has anyone ever had this problem? I am having problems with drinking my isopure water with protein. Other than this I am doing great!

Almost from the first after my surgery (12/06/04) I found that my sense of taste was altered. I found that things I tasted after the surgery did not taste as they did before the surgery. I did outgrow this quickly, but it really set me back those first few week. I was very glad that I did not stock up on protein drinks because all the ones I had I could not stand. I went to my Whole Foods Market and found that they had an entire row of protein drinks. I tried Jay Robb's and I am thrilled with the vanilla and chocolate, each have 24 grm protein in 8 oz water or skim milk. Sometimes when I introduce back a new post op food, it has lost some of the taste that I remembered. Also sometimes my smelling foods which I used to enjoy, now smell bad. Maybe it is the new stomach and the lack of acid or enzymes or it could be the effects of the anesthestia. Good luck on your journey and know that things change rapidly. Monica 330/299/???

I agree totally! But it does come back with time. My RNY was 12/17 and I'm now on regular foods. I think my taste buds are like before. But in the beginning, I was super sensitive to salt and sugar, and now less so. This too will pass! As for the Isopure, I have heard other people advocate it, so just stick with it, or try something different. I like Unjury, others have recommended lots of things. Check out the reviews, elsewhere on this site, and you can usually order samples.

wow are you lucky, i had my surgery on Dec 15 and I just moved to puree foods today, for 3 weeks, no real food until Jan 29!!! It is amazing how surgerons vary on what they want you to eat

Oh I totally know how you feel. After surgery all the liquids (except milk) that i loved pre surgery tasted so aweful post surgery. I used to drink crystal lite, and diet snapple by the gallon. NOw it tastes horrible. In the beginning even water tasted nasty (it had a very metallic flavor) Now the only liquids I drink are milk, water, and my protein shake. But I don't mind that. they taste good. Christine

You are so lucky you like your protein drink because everthing I've tried I gag up. I agree with you I loved crystal Lite now I have to dilute it to try to get it in. My taste buds r off AND my sense of smell is off.
