Liquid Diet! UKKKK!!!!
I have been on this liquid diet sience Tuesday, I am really getting tired of Chicken Brooth I am almost to the point of throwing up! My surgery is Thursday the 30th of december, all I get is Broth and Jello I don;t know if I can Handle this anymore, anyone out there who had to do a liquid diet for 10 days??? Please Help!! Heather Sizemore
I've noticed the difference in pre and post surgery instructions. I have my surgery this Monday, the 27th and was told a regular breakfast the 26th, lite lunch, liquid supper, nothing by mouth after midnight.
You do have other choices of liquids. Of course, do what your surgeon said, not what I say. Boullion might be better. Don't know if you are using the canned chicken broth, but heard it is pretty bad. There are 100% juices you could have like apple and grape. Just think of the end results of this journey and everything will be fine.

Heather, I know just how you feel! I, too, was told by my surgeon to lose ten pounds before surgery, or he would postpone it. This is to shrink and soften the liver, thus allowing the surgeon to better maneuver in that area (assuming yours is going to be a Lap RNY) and also lessening the pain level for the patient AFTER the surgery.
My diet was not necessarily totally liquid...although he did recommend it. I started eating nothing but tuna fish snack packs, protein shakes, jello, and sugarfree popsicles. Even after I was told to lose those ten pounds, my surgery was postponed twice anyway, for different reasons, and it just KILLED me to continue on that diet, but I did.
The reason I know what you are saying about being totally sick of the liquid diet is because that is what I am on now. Every surgeon is different, and mine requires three weeks of clear liquids following surgery, much as you described, then another three weeks of thicker liquids, followed by introducing soft foods gradually to the diet. I have a little over one week left on the clear liquids, and seeing my husband and son eat dinner yesterday just about KILLED me!! But I hung in there.
Believe me, it is all worth it!! It is just so amazing to star****ching that weight start pouring off right after surgery! I cannot rememer being so happy.
Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers as your day approaches.
God bless you!
Pat
I am having the Lap RNY surgery and I just suffered through Christmas dinner yesterday. As hard as it was to sit there and watch everyone eat ham and rolls and mash potatoes and stuffing and cookies and.......anyways it wasn't easy so I know what you are going through. My surgery is almost exactly 24 hours away and I am starting to get nervous but excited. I think today will be the longest day ever!!! My dietician put me on a liquid diet 7 days prior and a clear liquid diet the last two days. So yesterday and today I too had water and chicken broth and jello. Now I just want to get the surgery over and done with and then start on the road to a skinnier me!! Good luck to you. Keep us posted!
Hi Heather,
I know your pain! I was on a liquid diet for 5 days prior to my surgery. I drank a lot of decaf tea and cooked chicken broth with salsa, then strained it out. It gave me the taste of the salsa without having the chunky parts. Also, try straining soups, I think they have more flavor than just chicken broth!
I can't satnd jell-o so I didn't have any of that, jus****er, tea and broth. The first few days are the hardest. It does get better!
Have a great night and good luck on your surgery!
Rachel
I know what you mean ... but how rotten that your doc is making you do this BEFORE surgery! I had just one day of liquids before surgery ... and of course I've been doing liquids after. (I'm up to soft foods now.) You may find that some tastes are different after. I became more sensitive to salt, for instance. You will have to experiment with foods to find one you like. Personally, I am now relying on the Soup at Hand soups, Jello of course, and the Unjury protein drinks (with bananas, etc. added, especially). I'm wondering if this is all a set-up -- by the time we can eat solid food we will be so HAPPY that it won't even matter if it is just 6 teaspoons of food! Just having something to chew will be enough!
Hello Heather my dear,
Well YES, I feel your pain. I was on a 10 day liquid and veggies diet until Christmas day when the veggies were done with.
If you can have veggies, make a nice soup with the broth. Do not use canned broth girl. I am using Knorr Swiss veggie buillon cubes. I add more water than called for because I don't like the taste of salt. I add snowpeas, onions, celery, carrots, fresh parsley and basil. I eat lovely salads with red leaf lettuce, red onion, grape tomato and grilled portabello mushrooms on top. I had that for Christmas dinner with my soup.
I eat sugar free popsicles when I need a little something special. Sugar free jello is yummy, favorite is mixed fruit. It is not forever. It's temporary and we can handle any hardship temporarily. Keep your eye on the bigger pie. You'll be okay.
Let me know if I can do anything to support you in this.
Peace ~ K
