New Post-Op Questions (12/9/04)
Hello Everyone,
I had lap RNY on 12/9 and am feeling wonderful. No pain and I have been able to tolerate everything. My biggest problem is head hunger and protein. Could you tell me what your doctor required you to drink after you got out of the hospital? I am required to get in at least 2 ounces of liquid per hour and should be slowly working my way up to 4. This is not a problem for me. The problem is that I really just wan****er and can't seem to bring myself to put protein in it. Has anyone else experienced this? If so how did you get your protein in being a new post-op? I have been getting a little in by putting scoop in my veggie broth and SF Carnation Instant Breakfast. My dietician would like us to get in between 80-90 grams of protein in a day and right now I'm feeling that that enormous amount is impossible. Help Me!

Hi Christina! I am supposed to be getting in around 60 grams of protein a day and have been doing pretty well with that. I'm having a hard time with my water!
I got chocolate and unflavored unjury powders. I have been having a cup of skim milk with the chocolate powder in it, warmed up. It makes the best hot chocolate and it goes down very smoothly. I have been adding the unflavored to just about everything else I've eaten...soup, yogurt, sf pudding, oatmeal, etc. It really adds up.
I did buy the Isopure drinks - 40 gr protein in 20 oz drink, but haven't been in the mood for them. Maybe when I go back to work on Monday. I'd planned on drinking one each afternoon.
Warm stuff goes down easier for me, so I've started making a cup of decaf tea in the am 1/2 hour after my breakfast.
It is all such a learning curve! Best of luck to you!

Hi Fran! My brother lives in TN and we go every fall to visit him. It is soooo beautiful there!
I got the protein powders from www.unjury.com. They have chocolate, unflavored and vanilla. I am not a vanilla person, so just bought the chocolate and unflavored. You get 20grm of protein in 1 scoop. You can get a sample pack where you get 1 serving of each - I think it was $5 and you get it in 3-4 days. They are really quick, that way you can try it before buying the large containers.
I love using the chocolate with skim milk to make hot chocolate. It is better than nestle! The unflavored mixes well and goes in just about anything. It doesn't have a taste and doesn't make the stuff thick. The trick is to add it cold, mix well and then heat it up. If you put it in hot stuff right off the bat, it thickens and looks like egg drop soup! I did that the first time I added it to broth. I've added it to chocolate carnation instant breakfast and skim milk (32 grams of protein!), soups, broth, yogurt, applesauce, pudding, etc. When you get your powder, they give you lots of neat recipies to try using their products too.
I also bought some of the zero carb Isopure from GNC. Some of the flavors aren't bad - I liked the orange and grape the best. It is 40 grm protein in 20oz of clear liquid. They kind of taste like unsweetened Kool-Aid. Just don't smell them (protein-y smell) and drink them really cold.
Best of luck to you on 12/28! Just around the corner!

I am still pre-op (surgery scheduled for Monday), but my doctor has had me on Weight/Inches and an optional fruit protein drink. I got both from his office. I can also take the Carnation Instant Breakfast but need to add Beneprotein. They told me that post op I have a choice of OPTISOURCE or Carnation Instant Breakfast with a scoop of Beneprotein. I have tried the Carnation Breakfast with the Beneprotein and it has no taste and makes the drink thicker. I have just continued more with the Weight/Inches because it has more protein and my levels were a little low. They have not suggested this for Post-Op though because it makes too much and gets thicker the longer it sits.
I hope this helps.
