ok... I messed up big time. When I went to my first consultation and was asked if I smoke I said no because I had stopped for a few weeks. But with the surgery date creeping up (dec 14th) I started getting nervous and started back smoking. Well, I got a cold a few weeks ago & 11/22 the cough got bad so I went to see my PCP. The little cold had turned into bronchitis. I stopped smoking for about a week and as soon as the bronchitis seemed to be getting better I started back smoking. Well today was Pre-Op and I could tell the bronchitis had not completely went away and the chest X-rays confirmed that. So today I did admit to the nurse and doctor (Barix clinic Wylie, TX) that I had been smoking (which is why I probably got bronchitis in the first place). They were so nice but at the same time straightforward with me about the smoking. They WILL NOT do the surgery if they know you have been smoking. If they suspect you have been smoking then the day of surgery they will draw blood and check for carbon monoxide in your blood and will cancel the surgery on the spot if the blood work detects you have been smoking. They are going to call me later this week with a new surgery date (at least 6 weeks out). You have to be smoke-free at least 6 weeks. I'm on Avolex for the bronchitis and hopefully 6 weeks from now I will get a clean bill of health. NO more smoking for me!

As hard as it was to have your surgery postponed it is for the best!! To stop smoking is the hardest thing I have ever seen my Hubby do. But he did and I'm so proud!! Your recovery will be so much easier if you put those smokes away for good. You know how bad it hurts to cough with a bad case of bronchitis just think how much worse that would be with a large incision on you gut!! OUCH!!! Hang in there you will be feeing better soon!! I also smoke. My surgery is tomorrow, my Doc just told me that I need to cut back. I was smoking a pack a day, but have cut back. Surgery is tomorrow so I will not smoke for 12 hours prior to surgery. The anesthesiologist states to quit or cut back. I guess this all depends on the Doc as well. Good luck to you all.
