December 7th My New Life Begins

Can anyone tell me why the surgeon would want me to be clear liquids for 5 days before surgery?They said it is to shrink my liver. Has anyone else had to do this.

My doctor required me to lose weight before surgery for that same reason they put me on 1000 calories diet

Congratulations on your surgery date of 12/7/04 - that is MINE TOO!!!! I will also have to be on clear liquids 5 days prior to surgery too. I am not sure why - I have lost 29 lbs already. But, if a clear liquid diet is all it takes for the final step to have this life saving surgery - I'm all for it as I am sure you are too. Good luck to you. Jill

I am scheduled for December 7th too! I have to do clear liquids 2 days before the surgery. I have also been encouraged to lose weight before the surgery to help reduce the size of my liver. Good luck! Mary

Hi Joanne, And all the other ladies. My surgery date is Dec. 7th too. I think most of the docs have you on clear liquids or some type of low carb diet before surgery. I also heard it was to help shrink the liver which makes it easier to get to the stomach to do the surgery. I'm so excited, can't believe it's almost time for a new life. I'll be praying for all of us as we start this new part of our lives!!YARAHHHH!! Vivian

Fatty Liver is risky and diet shrinks it for surgery. I have to do Atkins for 2 weeks before my surgery.
