WELL...IT'S REALLY HAPPENING!!!
THAT'S ALL I KEEP SAYING. IT'S A SCARY THING BEING 22 AND UNDERGOING GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY TO LIVE A LONGER LIFE. I NEVER IMAGINED I'D HAVE TO DO THIS. I HOPE I'LL BE ABLE TO FOLLOW EVERYTHING VERY CLOSELY AFTER THE SURGERY. I'M SO EXCITED BUT ALSO AFRAID OF THE STATISTICS..1 IN EVERY 50 HAS A MAJOR COMPLICATION AND 1 IN EVERY 100 DIES. THAT'S A SCARY THOUGHT FOR ANYONE BUT I'VE REALIZED WITHOUT THIS SURGERY, I HAVE NO LIFE. I'VE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS FOR A YEAR AND AM HAPPY WITH MY DECISION...JUST NERVOUS. BUT I'M VERY CONFIDENT IN MY SURGEON AND HOSPITAL. I'VE NEVER HAD SURGERY LIKE THIS AND I HAVE NO CHILDREN SO I'M NOT SURE OF WHAT TO EXPECT. I JUST NEED SUPPORT AND I CAN'T FORGURE OUT HOW TO POST ON THIS SITE WITH MY JOURNEY AND SUCH..LOL..SILLY ME
yes, well when i wrote the post I hadn't realized how worried i actually sounded..lol.. I do have people in my life that support me i really can't wait to be on the losing side. I wish you all the best too. I can't believe that by the end of the year we will be thinner and healthier!! it's so exciting!! well i wish you luck. when's your pre-op? what hospital?

cher
Hi Cher!
First of all...Congrats on the date! After all the work we put into requesting this surgery and getting insurance approval...just getting an actual date is a major accomplishment! Secondly...Any surgery is scary, but if you read through a lot of the posts on the different boards, the main thing that most people say as far as regrets go is that they regretted that they didn't do it sooner!
Best of luck to you and keep posting. We will be here for you
Pam
The statistics I have uncovered in my research have been much less than what you indicate here. Complication rate is 2% and mortality rate is less than .06%. (point, zero, six ... less than 1%) This is documented on many web sites. The majority of the complications are standard types of wound infections that can relate to any major surgery. They are not specific to WLS. Furthermore, the majority of the fatalities are in patients with extremely high BMI's (70 +) or patients with pre-existing co-morbidities that make any surgery for them a much higher risk. (ie: anistectic alergies) In reality, the surgery has very reasonable complication rates and very acceptable success rates. The key is to locate a reputable surgeon, with a successful record of many surgeries performed. Look for a surgeon with a good after-care program, as it is essential for long-term success. Good luck to you. I am having my surgery on Dec 15th. Dr. O'Malley, Rochester, NY
