Can anyone tell me when is the most accurate time to weigh yourself. Even as a nurse I'm not sure of this; and I understand fluid shifts in the body. I work 7p to 7a. I come home in the morning and weigh myself naked. The scale reads 151 or 152#s (depending on how much I ate during the night). I sleep all day until 5pm (to work another 12 hour shift) and weigh again when I wake up and the scale reads 149 to 150#s. I never know what my accurate weight is. The am or pm weight. I eat during the night and rarely to never during the day. My last meal of the day is generally about 5am or 7am on work days I eat small meals during the night. Soup and crackers. I snack on fruits, veggies and lite popcorn. I drink Crystal Light and decaf green tea. So I really don't eat a lot of junk or heavy meals. I eat frequently enough to keep my metabolism burning while I'm working because I'm constantly moving and burning calories while I work. But I just want to know WHEN IS THE CORRECT TIME OF DAY TO WEIGH MYSELF? ANY answers would be appreciated!

Charlotte, I don't think there is any one "correct" time to do it. I think the key is to do it on a regular basis and with all the same conditions each time. So, if you want to weigh yourself every day at 5 pm buck naked, then always weigh yourself at that same tiome, no clothes. I have a personal theory that weighing oneself on a daily basis is a dangerous thing. To me, it is "fat lady" thinking. Worrying about gaining a pound is counter productive in my opinion. And I am all about NEVER being in denial about my weight ever again, so I weigh myself once a week, always first thing in the morning, after going to the bathroom and with no clothes. Once a week is enough time to get a couple pounds gained under control. I left obsessing about my weight behind me on the day I had my RNY. jean

Hi Charlotte, I don't really know an answer for you since you work nights. I would continue to do what your doing and weigh when you wake up. I weigh when I wake up at 5:00am after I go to the potty and take off all my clothes. Good luck and I hope you find a good answer. Take care, Diana

I agree with Jean. While I was losing my weight (when I was still heavy) I did weigh myself once a wk but now that I've lost 187 lbs I could care less how much I weigh (but thats just me). Now I might weigh once a month. The only reason why I know how much I weigh now is I had hand surgery 2 wks ago and they weighed me before surgery. So don't stress yourself with weighing everyday cause it sounds like your stressin yourself out over 3 or 4 lbs. Just keep in mind about all the other pounds you have lost and about how great you look that those pounds are gone.....at least thats what I do. Take care of yourself and keep up the good with what you are doing, Yvonne

Thanks everyone. Please understand. I do not obsess about my weight!! I keep a daily journal of everything I eat. I weigh daily to monitor if there are certain eating patterns, habits or foods that may or may not cause me to gain those extra pounds so I can avoid this. I am now 5 pounds away from personal ULTIMATE goal of 140#. My goal is to MAINTAIN my weight between 140 and 150#s. I do not desire to ever be above 150#s again. Daily weights keep me in check and on track towards my life-long goal of maintaining a healthy weight. I'm not concerned about a pound or two daily. I just want to keep those pounds in check. There's nothing more devastating than to weigh weekly and see that you've gained 5 or 6 pounds then obsess about losing that. I can wear my 18 y/o's clothes and sizes I haven't worn since junior high and high school and I'm 36 y/o. BTW: I discovered. You should weigh yourself in the evening before going to bed and after you've voided. Your fluids have shifted and circulated through the body and gives a more accurate count of your actual weight.
