Exercise Question

Hi Everyone, I have an exercise question. Does anyone do any type of exercising in the comfort of their own home. I can't walk because of my bad left heel and I can't do any lifting or strenuous exercise because of an incisional hernia. But I feel like I need to be doing something. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. Jill

Hi Jill, Shame on me but I do next to nothing and always have as I fear my body getting "addicted" to exercising then if I can't exercise for a while, I'll gain weight. Stupid, I know, but that is my rational. I walk my daughter to and from the bus stop which is about 1/2 mile every day since school returned. I am much more active due to more energy and my house stays loads cleaner. If you are like me, I bet you can't sit still very long anymore like we used to. So, I bet you are loads more active than you WERE!!! As long as the pounds are still coming off, I plan to keep up what I am doing. I'll worry about toning later. Tracy

Hi Tracy, you are exactly right. I have loads more energy but I haven't lost anything in almost 2 months. I just keep gaining and losing the same few pounds. I saw my surgeon and he said that I should do some kind of aerobic exercising but I can't walk because of my heel and I can't do any weight lifting because of my hernia. So hear I am trying to figure what I can do to get this weight loss moving again. I try to tell myself that isn't bothering me but deep down it is. Anyway, thanks for the input! Jill

Hi Again Jill, Have you tried any of the sweating to the oldies or other Richard Simmons tapes? They are usually very low impact to no impact. Yoga also might be an option. Hope these ideas help! Tracy

I have a teadmill and a Gazelle. I also use Richard Simmons and have some toning bands. With your heel and incision, I would suggest a Gazelle. They run around $200, and you can buy them online. Shipped to your house for around $35. I love mine. It gives a good workout, no stress to the joints and doesn't hurt the feet. Just be sure to stick with the 10 minutes to start. You will work muscles you didn't know you had at first. I can go 40 minutes now. Nona

Hi Jill I know you said walking is out of the question,But maybe a exersize bike would be the answer for you.I walk almost every day and it has helped me loosing the weight.Also I have been weight training, I am trying to rebuild my body after years and years of abusing it.Good luck to you....Steven

I used to use an exercise bike, but it hurt my knees.(and bored me to death) My brother told me that if you ride a bike, you need one that surrounds your foot or it is bad for your knees (the petal, that is) That gazelle looks fun to me. I always look at it and think it looks good, but I have never tried it. I have been doing "walk away the pounds." It has a one, two, and three mile walk in the house. I usually do the 2 mile, never tried the one mile, and rarely do the 3 mile. The 2 mile is 30 minutes, and when I finish I do floor exercises...sit ups and legs and butt. It does use weights, but there is one girl that doesn't and it is a good work out without them. I don't know if you can do them if you can't walk. It is like marching in place, then there is a side step, one step where you kick one foot forward, then the other, and one where you lift your knee (hardest one for me) It adds arm movements to make the work out harder, but there is one girl who modifies them. Would you be able to do the gazelle? I will try to think of other things. I can see why you are frustrated. =( Allison

If there is anywhere around you that has a water aerobics class I would reccomend that. It is awesome exercise with the water for resistance and no impact so very easy on your body. It was the only kind of exercise I could do even when I was heavy and sick.If no classes are offered maybe you can just sort of swim and make up your own routine, I could help with some suggestions on the moves we did if you would like me to.
