Venting...is this legal?
Ok, I am venting a little because this has me steaming mad.
I work as a Realtor which means I am self-employed/sub-contractor. The Broker of the company I work for wants a mandatory dress code! Here are a few things they are working on getting approved by the attorney:
1. No open toe shoes...(sandals)
2. Skirts on or below the knee
3. No sleeveless shirts eg (tank tops)
4. Socks or panty hose worn @ all times
5. No jean attire...shirt, pants, skirts
I just don't see how they can do this. It has me so steaming mad over this issue. I figure if my clothes are good enough to wear in the CHURCH on Sundays its ok to work in!

Hi Karie
I don't know about the legalities of the dress code since you are self-employed. Before I had my kidos I worked in banking and dress code was always an issue.
Having dealt with several realtors over the years I know you all don't work the regular 9-5, M-F, hours. I have never been offended or thought my realtor was less than professional if he/she did not wear a business suit. Most of the men in our area wear docker type pants w/a polo in the summer and the women wear sun-dress type clothes, WITHOUT hose. Who wants to wear hose, close toed pumps and a suit in the summer???
I have not met a realtor yet, who came to an appointment looking like they came out of the garden or off the river.
Good Luck, and whatever the outcome, know that you look and feel so much better wearing whatever they make you than you did last summer
Hugs, Kimberly
No offense intended, Karie, but if my realtor has shown up in jeans & a tank top, even in summer, I would have found a different one. I believe that the professional look is very important & people do judge you by your looks. That's one problem obese people have had to deal with. For some reason fat = lazy & messy. We know that's not the case but unfortunately it is a sterotype. The same goes for particular types of clothing. You may be the best realtor in the area but if you don't have the right look it will hurt you.
I agree that his guidelines are a bit out of line but they aren't too far off from many businesses. I work for a insurance company & very few clients see the employees. Most of the work is done over the phone. We are still required to dress business casual and that includes no jeans or athletic shoes.
Hope you can come to an understanding that will please you both.
