what is the difference between proximal and distal as pertains to the surgery. My surgeon by-passed about 100 cms. of intestine to make the "Y" with the left top of the "Y" being the duodenum and the right top of the "Y" leading to the pouch. Does that mean I had distal? How would proximal connect?

I'm not sure, but I think distal means maximum bypassed and proximal means less bypassed but a smaller pouch. Please, folks, correct me if I'm wrong, because I usually am. I have/had a 60cc pouch with 150cm bypassed. Nona

Hello, I cannot give you exact measurements but the way I have always remembered distal from proximal is Distal=Distant (they bypass more intestine) And proximal=Close proximity(they bypass less). Just a silly way I lept the two straight in my head. Sorry I could not be more help. Type in Distal vs Proximal into a web searcher like Webcrawler and I am certain you can get your question answered. Tracy

hahahaha I will confuse you even more and tell you I have a "medial" It just pertains to the length of intestines they bypass Proximal being less. Jackie
