The subject of HAIR............

Oh, my. Just when I thought things could NOT get any worse with the "fallout" situation, (yes, I'm the gal who's broken not one, but TWO vacuum cleaner belts with the hair clogging the roller brush! ) NOW I am finding MANY hairs that are starting to BREAK OFF about an inch off my scalp, giving me a very interesting look, indeed. In about 2 weeks time, my hair texture has changed from straight and shiny to a really dried-out, brittle, matted, wavy MESS. This scares me, because it happened to my sister, and her long, shiny blonde locks were transformed into something that resembles Rod Stewart on a BAD hair day, a Mullet from Hell, as she calls it. I was SO hoping this wouldn't happen. I've done everything just the way my surgeon told me to, but I guess that doesn't matter, huh? Is this happening to anyone else? Got any suggestions? My surgeon sells a "hair formula" vitamin that I could just KICK myself over for not starting sooner. Anybody use those and see any improvement? How about any hair products that you swear by? I'm using all salon products with both a rinse-out AND a spray-on/leave-in conditioner. Wonder if it will help.......... Donna

Donna, My niece, who is one of those naturally skinny people, had a similar problem with her hair breaking off after she spent a few months refusing to eat ANY fat. The girl was getting fewer than 10 fat grams per day, and wouldn't listen to people who told her that she needed some fat just for the fat soluble vitamins. She started listening when her hair started breaking off, though. I don't know if the lack of fat in the new diet could be affecting your hair this way or not, but it sounds like the same problem she was having. Good Luck, Deb

Hi Donna- Well, I haven't had that bad of a problem with the hair, but I did notice some "thinning" about a month ago. My hair was baby fine and thin long before WLS, so I was always a panic about this. I recently started taking Biotin, which I probably won't notice the effects of that for about a month. But, I did start using Nexxus Vitatress Biotin Shampoo and Leave in conditioner. My hair is softer, fuller looking, and seems to be regaining some shine. Best of Luck Hang in there! Kathy

Oh Donna, I know where you're at.. My hair is coming out by the handful ! It is scary.. I'm following all diet instructions as well and take Nexuss Hair Food vitamins everyday and the hair loss is not stopping- errr! I did go to the salon and had a good trim and my hairdresser put in a few extra layers for fullness. I also bought a shampoo, conditioner and spray in gel series called "Thick"..On the upside of this no one else can notice my hair loss and it will grow back ..I hope Have a good day.. Elaine

Hi there Donna, How are you?? Yes my hair is falling out alot. I dont use anything more than more conditioner when I wa**** There are alot of short hairs where it breaks off more closer to the scalp. I will be patient and wait for this to stop. I have cut my hair off very short. It is blonde so I dont see much of the hair on the brush. Like I said in one of the previous posts. " I WILL TAKE THINNING HAIR ANYTIME IN EXCHANGE FOR THIS THINNING BODY" . I know it is very frustrating to see yourself like this but I can only suggest you cut it short like I did. It looks much better now and not so noticeable. My hair is very dried out looking now so I will just condition it more.. Be patient Donna, we really can"t do anything about it. I think it just takes its course even when you use those products. TAKE CARE.... TO YOU,JUST HANG IN THERE OK....LORRAINE We have come to far soon will be goal time and we will be for joy...

NIOXIN makes a hair vitamin...I found it at my hair salon, it was $14.95 for a 30 day supply. My nutrition counselor had said the NIOXIN shampoo helps with hair loss, the vitamins are supposed to work even better. I have a swallowing problem, so I break my pill in half but its worth the hassle, my hair loss is slowing finally

Hi Donna! Unfortunately, I have recently started experiencing hair loss also. I started a vitamin from GNC called Nourishair. I take 1 pill twice a day. So far, no luck with it. I have thin hair anyway, and I'm losing quite a bit everyday. I hope it stops too. I'm the type of person that has to wash my hair every single day, but I've started washing it every other day now. I'm not using any special hair products, what do you suggest or should I even bother? My mother had surgery about 1 1/2 years ago and she experienced hair loss about this same time (3-4 months post-op) and she has recently started losing hair again at 1 1/2 years post-op. I've also heard that hair loss is a side effect from anthesesia. Do you use protein supplements? I don't. They are gross. I hope your hair loss stops. Linda

Thanks, guys! You are all so great to respond! Yes, I do use a protein supplement shake every day, sometimes twice if I have to. I really like the Atkin's Chocolate Delight in a can. It tastes the best of the pre-mixed. Trial and error seems to be the only way to find what you like. I like GNC because they will let you return ANYTHING with a receipt. If you taste it and don't like it - return it! As for the hair products, right now I'm as lost as everyone else. Thanks for the cheering words! I know the hair WILL grow back. As long as the FAT doesn't!!! Donna

I am having the same problem.....i got 10 inches cut off so my hair was more even....I use hair nourishment pills, bioton and now i use the Nioxon shampoo, cleanser, and scalp treatment. the lady that did my hair said if i didnt use the hair nourishment pills i probably would of been bald by now. which isnt good cuz my hair dont grow fast. they tell you that it takes 90 days for new hair to come threw the scalp.....well it hasnt been that long since i started using the Nioxin stuff so of course i am still losing my hair like crazy. honestly i would sit and cry on how much hair i would lose in a day. i try not to let it get to me but it does.....they try to tell me it is cuz i am not getting enough protein well i am getting over a 100 grams a day. and we are suppose to get 60 grams. then they try to tell me i dont take enough vitamins so i take more vitamins. ok now they are saying i dont get enough calcium so now getting more of that. ok then they say cuz i had 4 major surgery is another reason of the hair loss. now i can understand that cuz when my mom had surgery he lost some hair......and you ready for this they are telling me now that it will get worse before it gets better....lucky me i will be bald soon.....i hope this let you know you are not the only one with this problem........hugs.....lynda
