Dumping

The QOD, which I didn't get around to answering, but did read made me wonder if the percentage of people with RNY that dump really is lower than the published stats of 70-80%. I also don't dump but then it has only been tested with sugar once, and it was quite by accident. I pulled the wrong (sugar laden) yogurt out of the fridge and ate it, then realized how creamy it was, checked the label and noticed it had 30 grams of sugar, not the 12 I thought I was eating. I did not have one ill effect. I still "pretend" that I dump and intend to pretend that for a long while...at least till I'm at goal. After that, I would like to be able to eat an ocassional treat, but it scares me too. Jenni

Good Morning Jenni, Through reading the message boards and profiles over the last 4-5 years on the OH website, I have noticed that if the national average of dumping is 70-80%, I don't believe it is anywhere near that. I have a girlfriend who had surgery just about a week after me and she ate pecan pie a week after surgery with no ill effects. Short of the little bit of sugar in condiments, that is about the only sugar that I consume anymore. I did have a peanut butter cup on Valentines day, took about an hour to eat on of the minis, but I didn't have any ill effects either. I just stay away from it because sugar and carbs makes me crave more food and I don't want to start the snacking cycle again! I'll stick with my beef jerky for snacking. Have a great day! Tracy

I don't remember where I saw the statistic that made me believe this, but I thought I read that 70% was the percent for not dumpnig and 30% did dump. Lisa G

Hi Jenni, I don't know percentages, but I sure know what it feels like to dump. It is getting better, and I don't do it as often as I used to...It's a horrible feeling. Anyway, If you don't dump, just be glad. Jodie

My sister dumped BIG time on ONE bite of chocolate cake, right after her surgery. Months later, she can eat anything but M&Ms (yes, she's a chocoholic) and has no problems. The closest I've come to dumping is when I had a few sips of wine on an empty stomach. Got flushed, nauseous, and crampy. Made a run for the restroom, but it calmed down by the time I got there. I was lucky. Believe me, I have NOT challenged the dumping syndrome since then. THAT was enough for me!!!! Donna
