Are beans worth the carbs?
Do you guys think that bean carbs are worth the protein level? I'm talking about black beans, refried beans, navy beans, etc. I LOVE 'em, but if I eat them regularly, will I be overloading on carbs, since most have more carbs (fiber, I know, but still carbs. My NP says, "A carb is a carb is a carb." ) than protein?
OK - who has some expert "bean knowledge" out there?
Donna
Hello Donna,
I am no carb expert any more than anyone else in our situation. But I try to stay away from the beans as much as possible. Occasionally is fine, but as a daily source, I just don't think it is worth all of the carbs you get from them. It is too easy to get carbs in just about anything you eat, If I am going to eat carbs, I'd rather have them taste better than beans! Tracy
Thanks, Tracy and Jackie! (Jackie, you're a HOOT!)
Yeah, I haven't been indulging in beans at all, then yesterday I had some black beans, threw some chicken, cheese, and tomatos in, and they were SO delicious! They are on my "OK" list, but when I check the label, they're so high in carbs that I would just as soon only have them as an occasional treat. I know they're supposed to be "good" carbs, but I still think the count is too high vs. protein level.
Oh, well. Back to chicken!

My nutritionist said beans were fine...
heck I can't eat that much anyway and they are good for you....at least those of us that NEED the fiber since I have been constipated since surgery.
I did refried beans when I was able to eat my pureed phase....salsa and melted cheese...mmmm good
NOW I am on this chili kick! But last night I doubled the boca burger ground beef and only added 1 can of kidney beans. Then I ate it on SOY TORTILLA chips with some shredded mexican cheese blend melted in...mmmm good!
PLUS it fills me up and I stay fuller longer and can eat less of it....1/2 cup compared to 3/4 C I normally eat
There are good carbs and bad carbs....I am going to be a NORMAL person and jus****ch carbs in moderation. I make sure I get in my protein so if my carbs are higher one day....and my calories are low and my protein is HIGH...I don't care.
Whole grains, beans ...good fiber sources, complex carbs....
