We went out Saturday night with friends to a comedy club where they have a 2 item minimum. Well we had just gone out to eat where I made excellent food choices--- blackened Tilapia with garlic mashed potatoes and Broccolini ( I love that skinny broc!)... SO needless to say everyone but me got DESSERT at the comedy club and I didn't even have a BITE--which I normally do but I was still quite stuffed. Had been thinking about it all week...and decided to get a glass of RED WINE. I was able to drink about 2/3-3/4's of the glass over a good 1 1/2 hrs time. NOT one problem....no drunk feeling, sickness, nothing. I had planned on getting decaf coffee for my 2nd item but went ahead and convince my hubby to have a 2nd Rolling Rock to go with his chocolate cake I am gonna try to gradually work on my wine intake over the next few months.... I did save calories during the day to allow for the ones in the wine. Didn't have my afternoon snack! I am looking forward to wine tasting in NZ and Australia in August!

I've never been a big drinker anyway---I mean maybe 1/2 a glass of wine every 6 months...but I did have a small sip of my husband's kalhua (how do you spell that...nothing looks right) and creme a couple weeks ago and had no problems, but it really was not even a teaspoon full. Christy

We went to Red Lobster a few weeks ago and they had the most yummy looking Sunset Pina Colada on the menu. I really debated about ordering one, but decided against it. I am kind of afraid to try a drink for the 1st time if I am not at home. My B-day is in a few weeks, so I just might try a tiny glass of wine then~wish me luck ~Kimberly

The first time, I tried a little red wine - unfortunately, on an empty stomach, and very nearly "dumped", but not quite. Got sweaty and ill-feeling, which passed very quickly, and then I felt the wine, which was quite pleasant. Have had 1/3 of a glass twice since then, with a little food in my tummy - no problems at all! I used to love a glass of wine a couple days a week, I just don't want to drink that much anymore. Donna

I know everyone gives people a hard time about drinking so soon after surgery, but I had a drink about 2 weeks after surgery. I drink with my friends about every other weekend and I drink screwdrivers or beer with tomato juice. I have also had some shots and wine. I have had no ill effects from the alcohol. I don't get drunk any faster , but I do get sober alot faster. It seems that the alcohol just doesn't absorb in my blood stream. I have had no problems with sugar, so I guess I have been lucky. Just remember that the liver absorbs the alcohol alot quicker and it isn't good, also these are just empty calories that none of us need.

I was considering having a drink last week. My problem was that I was not much of a drinker pre-op so I have no idea what kinds have more sugar and what i should stay away from no matter what. can anyone give me some ideas here? Thanks

According to my Dr Atkins Pocket Sized carb counter book Light Beer 12 oz- 4.6 carbs but beware the carbonation Bloody Mary 3 1/2 oz- 3.3 carbs Screwdriver 3 1/2 oz -8.6 carbs (could make it with that light oj) Hard liquor ---bourbon, gin, rum, vodka etc...any proof 1 oz = 0 carbs Wine- Red 3 1/2 oz -1.8 carbs White 3 1/2 oz - 0.8 carbs Wine cooler 3 1/2 oz -5.9 carbs SO any liquors you want---ok bu****ch what you mix with....most of them have SUGAR. They do have some Sugar Free mixes out now but not in the restaurants (except Don Pablo's is carrying the SF Margarita mix) But you can find them online or maybe at your local liquor store in SF options. Wine has a LOT less calories tooo than other alcohol options-- 3 1/2 oz is only 70-74 calories compared to 1 oz of hard liquor 82 without the mixer. I haven't tried any carbonated bevs yet and don't plan tooo any time soon and I don't really like Light Beers (I prefer darker imports) so probably just gonna stick with my Shiraz and Merlots if I want something!
