My surgery date was on 12/18/03, and I am still not able to eat food. When I take a small bite of fish - and chew chew chew and still wind up throwing my meal up. It has made my mealtime extremely unpleasant. Anyone out there that can give me some tips?

My surgery date was 12-22-03. I still have troubles with food. I threw up fish too...someone suggested moistening it before we eat it. I have been to chicken to try. I have issues with eggs, tomato sauce, and meat. I hate the idea of blenderizing stuff..the whole idea turns me off. Read what the others have posted, it has helped a lot. Sometimes I feel !!!!! Not to mention wanting to in a restaurant when I feel queasy!! Take care

Went to the Dr. yesterday and he told me to eat only pureed foods for the next week, as I was only 6 weeks out, and the pouch was still really new. If I am still having the problem, then he was going to have me come in to have an endoscopy done - as some scar tissue may have grown between my pouch and intestine - causing the purging.

Hi Judi Sorry you're having a hard time. I had my open RNY on 12/15 and haven't had any vomiting problems. But...if i drink too soon before or after I eat, I get very queezy. I have to watch that. I am also not getting in very much solid protien for fear of vomiting, I think. I am still relying a little too much on protein shakes. I can heat a little chicken, stewed or in soup works well cuz it's moist. I can eat fish if I broil it in the George Forman Grill. I'm not getting very much in, but trying. Hope this helps. Keep in touch. Jeanie

Went to see the surgeon today, and he suggested leaving the solids alone and only puree for the week. If it does not change in the week - then maybe I would have to go in for an endoscopy to see if too much scar tissue has grown over the opening to my intestine. I will let you know. But, I would have changed my decision to have this surgery. I am down 36 pounds, and love the thought that I will never be fat again. Judi

Hi Judi, Have you talked to your surgeon about this problem? Sounds like there may be a problem. I am one week ahead of you and have been able to keep almost everythig down. Are you able to keep liquids down ok? Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Judi I was having that problem and it was bad. I could eat yogurt and keep it down but a avocado made me puke for 3 hours. Most of it was foamy saliva. It is awful and frusterating. I suggest calling up your Dr and schedule a endoscope cuz it sure sounds like you have a stricture. Don't be afraid the procedure was simple and painless. Have them check you in.

You are amazing - went to see Dr. Capella yesterday, and he told me to puree everything for one more week. If I am still having the problem, because I am first into my sixth week on Thursday, he would schedule me for an endoscope. There might be some scar tissue that has grown from my pouch to my intestine. But, wouldn't I have to go to a gastroenterologist for this procedure? Or does the surgeon do it all?

Hi Jodi, I am 8 weeks post-op and I still have some problems with different food. I am on the 4th step which is basically try anything but go small and slow at first. I have problems with just about any kind of meat. I can eat it if it is in soups or stews but baked, grilled, or broiled is difficult. I was told that this will subside after a few months and it will get better and better each week. I would just think about meat and would lose my appetite. Now I am getting a little better with having an appetite. One BIG problem for me is eating TOOOOO FAST. That is when it feels like things are stuck and I'll burp or feel nausiated. Then I go get rid of it and I feel better. I still have not had ANY dumping syndrome as of yet. (Thank God) My advice is: Talk to your Doctor. If you get sick, go back to softer foods for the next two feedings. Try eating ice after you get sick for awhile. It helped me.
