Yes, that is the question...what to eat now??
Hi I'm new here and my name is Jean. I had surgery 12-22-03. I think I am eating too much or something. Food goes down really well sometimes. I can eat a whole sandwich (minus the crust). But somethings just don't agree at all..eggs...diet foods (healthy choice, weigh****chers). I am 4 weeks out and am feeling well but confused on the amount of food to eat and what type.
Hi Jean! I have the same date as you! I can eat maybe 5-6 ounces at a time (stuffed) and I think that is a lot! Do you drink while you are eating? They say that if we do, we flush the food out of our pouch and make room to eat more. I have not tried bread, I haven't any problems eating anything, but bread is too thick and has unneccesary carbs. Check with your doc to see how much he says your pouch should hold at a time. He should also have an eating plan for you to follow.
Good luck!

I had surgery on 12/22 too and I have troubles with bread too. I can eat it but just a small amount. I am eating about 1/2 cup of food. I was worried at first that that was too much but I looked at a little book my Dr's office gave me and that is normal. It says between 1/2 cup and 3/4 cup. I never drink when I eat and I stop drinking 30 minutes before and don't drink again for an hour. This is me. I was told to just wait 30 minutes to drink after eating but decided for me that an hour is better. I eat mostly soft foods or mushed foods. My stomach doesn't like eggs either even though it's on my list to eat.
Jean,
I am surprised you are able to eat a sandwich! Just the thought of bread turns me off, and I am not yet ready to venture that route. If I were you I would stick to protein protein protein. My hubby made a pork roast in the slow cooker. it came out so soft and tender and went down well, and it is all protein. I have also had meatloaf.
You might want to try to up your protein intake!
Good luck,
Erica
Hi Jean. I have to same surgery date as you too. I was craving baked beans and franks. My ex-hubby put them in the blender. It looked like but it tasted soooooooo good. I had a half cup. It went down smooth. But I usually stick to protein drinks, yogurt, apple sauce, deli thinnly meat roast beef or turkey with a side salad and / or tuna. I had a small baked potato the other night. It was YUMMMMMY too but tooooo many carbs!!!!!!!!!!
I am just a little over 6 weeks out and I am eating salads just fine. I didnt try one at alluntill my 1 mo check up because I had heard that we shouldnt have them so soon. So I asked my doctor and he told me salad was fine sence I was handling chicken and other meats fine. His words were if u can handle meat u can surely handle a salad. I really haven't had any problems with the foods i've tried. I do have a slice of uncrusted toast once in a while and have had no trouble with it but like the other poster said its just extra carbs that we dont need. I eat alot of chicken and i'm kinda getting sick of it. I'll have to find new ways to make it I guess.
I had my surgery on 12/22/03 also. I was really surprised by how much I've been able to eat...sometimes. I made an omelet with cheese, crab, and onions, and I knew that I made too much, but I figured I'd just stop eating when I felt full. I never did, and I ate the whole thing. I don't drink anything at least 15 minutes before I eat, and I wait an hour after. Yesterday I was trying to eat 3 oz. of fish, I ate half and threw it up. Go figure. I haven't tried salad yet, I'm a little scared to try. I was released from the hospital on Christmas day and sat through everyone eating a big dinner. The salad was the one thing that I really wanted. I see my dr. tomorrow, so maybe he'll give me the go ahead to eat whatever I can keep down.
