I had Lap RNY on 12/30/03. At first week check up post-op I was down 15.5 lbs. Some of you are doing a wonderful job with the weight loss. I always try to keep in mind that everyone is different and looses as a different rate. I am most happy that I have not had to take Gloucophage nor Avapro since surgery! I'm wondering what everyone else is finding works good for protein. I am having a difficult time getting in all my liquids. I guess I just don't feel hungry and don't think to drink. Thank God for my husband and three kids who are always saying "did you drink your stuff" or "are you ready for a drink". I'm wondering what others have been told about exercise. Mr. Dr. said walking 30 minutes a day five days per week was all that he would discuss with me at this time for at least six months! I was kind of surprised with that! How about other's? What have you been told about exercise.

Hi, Catherine. I, too, had a lap RNY on 12/30. I am incredibly grateful for this website because it has answered so many questions! I am still on clear liquids and will be for a few more days. I don't like water, so I am making pitchers of Crystal Light -- the cranberry flavor is good. I find myself drinking much more this way. I am eating jello and drinking two protein drinks a day. I found World Wide Pure Protein at Trader Joe's. Each drink has 35 grams of protein and only 2-4 carbs. They're OK as long as they're very, very cold. In addition, I am having broth. The plain chicken broth doesn't taste good to me at all, so I have been buying Progresso grilled steak or grilled chicken soups, heating them up, straining out the solids (which leaves a nice little side dish of meat, pasta and vegetables for someone else to eat), and having that. Might have a little more fat than the plain broth but tastes soooooo much better. Hopefully, I'm getting in all the liquid I need, but this will truly be my challenge. As for exercise, I am trying to take 20-30 minute walks several times a day. Walking is what my doctor advises. To be honest, though, I am absolutely exhausted and just want to sleep more than anything else. I guess this has been more traumatic to my body than I thought! Good luck to you! P.S. I've lost 13.5 pounds but seem to be in a bit of holding pattern the last couple of days. My doctor advised me to weigh only once a week. I think I will do that because daily weighing is making me crazy. After all this, I expect to see 1-2 pounds a day melt away!

Hi Catherine, My surgeon really stresses excercise, and wants us to be up to a minimum of 2-3 miles by the first 6wk post op visit, plus some strength training ... but if you are really concerned, talk to YOUR surgeon, and let them know your concerns/wishes .... but follow his/her program since you are under their care. Most surgeons are very accomodating, and want you to set goals for yourself, but not OVER do it to an extreme. Good luck on your journey!!
