post op diet
Hi all-
I'm a little over 2 weeks post-op and I was wondering if anyone was having any trouble progressing their diet. I am able to get one protein shake down each day, and for dinner I have an egg or some soup. Last night I had a slice of cheese for a snack. But all together, I am only getting in about 500 calories per day, which doesn't sound like enough to me. According to my post-op diet plan, I should be starting pureed meats etc., but this does not appeal to me. Even the egg gives me trouble sometimes. I have to eat/drink so slowly or it hurts. Sometimes it takes me a couple of hours to finish my 11 oz. protein drink. Last night, I could only eat half of my egg because I guess I ate too fast and I got a lot of pain. It's frustrating. (on the bright side, I've lost 30 pounds so far! Also, I haven't thrown up anything, which is a relief.)
I guess my question is how many calories is everyone consuming at this stage of the game, and does anyone know if I could be doing myself harm by not really progressing my diet that quickly or with much variety.
What do you think?
Melanie
I am 5 weeks out and the cream soups have been a God send. I add a little milk AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF PEAS(SQUASHED) and carnaition instant breakfast with one scoop of whey vanilla protien powder and 6 oz's of drink 112 grams of protien.Cheese is ok but low fat.I also drink crystle lite and sugar free popsicles.Good luck...steve
Hello Melanie~I am 4.5 weeks post-op LAP RNY and am on a soft/pureed diet for another 3.5 weeks. My nutritionist has me on 500 calories per day with 64g of protien for the 1st 6-9 months. So don't worry about your 500 calories, Im sure you are fine. I hate eggs so I have been eating meats and cheese along with my protien drink to get my levels up there. The thought of pureed meats was disgusting so I bought one of those chopper things w/a push down top. It will mince anything really well and I do this with my meats. I take tiny bites and chew, chew, chew. Chicken goes down well but I tried some slow-cooked pork roast and vomited. You might also try fat-free, sugar-free yogurt. Congratulations on your progress, you are going GREAT~Kimberly

Hi
I am three weeks post op. I am not having luck with the pureed at all.......it somehow gets "stuck" and I end up throwing up thick frothy mucos. Its gross. I talked to the doc yesterday and am having a upper GI in the AM. My esophagus has had to be stretched in the past and that might be whats going on.
I have had luck with cream soups but that is about it........and it takes awhile to get those down. I think it just takes time................
I am having trouble eating anything. Could not stand broth especially chicken broth, I can't handle plain water well, ending up throwing up. But I have found comfort in Gatorade. It is the only liquid I could take. My Doctor has let me eat anything that I please after having a week of losing appetite and throwing up.
I am not sure how many calories I consume everyday (Less than 500 for sure!!) but 20th day after my surgery I had already lost 25 lbs. It is cold in MN and it is hard for me to go out for walks, may be at the malls!!
I do not have a specific diet that I take than my Gatorade!!
Hi - I am 5 weeks out and have been dumping on certain foods. Guess I have been a tad to creative. Taco Bell refried beans are great (they make them with water instead of lard) and go down smooth. High in protein as well. Wendy's chili is also a God send. Other than than sf popsicles and protein shakes are my mainstays.
