Diabetes levels
I have a question for those who have diabetes. My question is, after the surgery, has anyones diabetes settle where they no longer need to take their meds and has your levels go up any down real fast at times? also when you need to raise your levels in a hurry, what do you take to raise it and not dump at the same time? I'm having issies and will be taking to my pcp but I just wanted to know if others are having the same issies as me. I pass out from my level going to low and I did eat yogurt, guess it wasnt enough. Thanks! Beth
I'm also a diabetic, and I just had my surgery 12/26. I am currently only taking insulin, but not the three orals I needed prior to sugery, but I've noticed that my blood sugar has gone up and not down as I'd hoped. I'm thinking it has something to do with my shakes, as the chocolate has 11g of sugar and the vanilla (which I can't stand) has 5g of sugar.
I think talking with your PCP is a good idea. I myself will be talking to my surgeon's office this morning.
I know quite a few people who have not needed their meds after surgery. I'm thinking both your and my blood sugars will stabilize once we have lost enough weight.
Good luck and take care.
Steph
I am a diabetic but no meds-- diet controlled. I find that if I eat every 3-4 hours(1/2 a shake) my blood sugars are being maintained. My fasting blood sugar has gone from 149 prior to surgery(12-24-03) to 122. My sister in law had the surgery in August and they have been able to cut down her insulin and oral meds quite a bit. She has lost 128 pounds so far.
Don't get discouraged. We have to learn new ways to control our blood sugars. For a insulin reaction-have you tried a glass of milk? Since it is part of our diet, it shouldn't cause the dumping syndrome.
Hang in there,
Pat
My doctor told me to avoid milk and no orange juice to rise my blood sugar. Said to use apple sauce instead. He also said to avoid sugar someone said there protein had 12grams sugar well thats a lot... my protein is 35 g protein, 3 g carb, and 1g sugar. my sugar went up higher than before surgery and was unstable for about 2 1/2 weeks then leveled off now its around 110 every day and around 145 after eating, I'm 5 weeks out.
Hey Beth!
I have diabetes also. I was taking Avandia & Amaryl. When I went into the hospital, they would give me an insulin injection if my blood sugars went over 150. They did stabilize while I was in the hospital (90)!
However, now that I'm home I find it's on a rollercoaster ride sometimes, 217, sometimes 167 etc. I wasn't taking any meds but when I started feeling really tired, I took my blood sugar and it was high. I thought that since it had stabilized in the hospital, I didn't have to worry about it-WRONG!! I started taking my Avandia again, and will see my surgeon next week to see what's up. Are you on insulin or meds? Maybe your doc will have you lower what you're taking since you're not eating as much as you use to. Hope everything gets better for you! I'm 5 weeks out...
HUGS,
Mary~
