12 years out this month, boy does time fly. Overall surgery went well, weight loss not so well. Thinking of a revision but with my current lifestyle, don't know if that is an option. Anyone else feeling the same?

I just re-joined Obesity Help, to seek support and answers to my questions, as I am in the exact same boat as you are! I am so frustrated...and upset with myself. And I never thought I'd be going through this again.  My surgery was open RNY on Dec 18 2001 and I lost 165 lbs...half of me, as I started at 327 lbs, at 32 yrs of age.  Now Im 40, and I am weighing in at 234-240 depending on the day... Hanging my head... Feeling like a failure... How did this happen?  I was okay with 10 lbs, and the docs told me I looked better...  Then 20... Then got a little scared when I approached 30... Then felt some guilt and shame and a need to try to hide it, when I hit 40 lbs back on...and then it happened...I crossed the 200lb mark.  Something I swore I would NEVER let happen again.  Depression.  And now, here I sit at 240 lbs, and it's like the last 40 happened in my sleep.  I've been extremely anemic, with a Ferritin of 3, when finally discovered, and basically lifeless and flat affect, for this entire year.  It's like I've missed a year of my life....
So...what do we do now?  Where do we turn?  Is there a diet to follow at this point?  My surgeon no longer is in business.  His key support group leader, is critically ill herself, so there is no support...and there are hundreds upon hundreds of patients of his, who must surely be needing support as well.  My surgeon was Dr. F.Edward Tenewitz, in Melbourne, FL.  Anyone out there, other than just me???  I feel so alone...

It sounds like you probably irritated your esophagus during one of your vomiting episodes. You may need something like prevacid or nexium especially if your have any reflux. I would suggest seeing a GI specialist who is familiar with gastric bypass patients. Good luck

Topic: RE: Iron Deficiency
I had to have them frequently last summer, none since Aug. It took about 3 minutes, placed an IV in my arm, pushed a low dose steroid, the Iron and them some Normal Saline to flush the catheter, pulled it out, put a bandaid on my arm and I went to work. Never had a reaction (adverse) to any of it. It brought my hematocrit up from 22 to 40 in 3 months. It was 32 in October, hasnt been checked since, will be rechecked in March. My MD said research shows about 20% of bypass patients will not absorb oral Iron in any form and will probably always need periodic infusion. I fought it for about 3 yrs. If I had realized what a piece of cake it was I would have done it much sooner. I had to pass out at work to get my wake up call that this couldn't be managed with oral Iron. Best wishes

I am 5+ years post op roux-en-y. The surgeon who did me, was sued for malpractice and no longer has anything to do with the surgery and refers all questions out to another surgeon. He never screened for psych problems and was sued by a patient who wanted the surgery reversed. He was a good technical surgeon, but provided no pre or post up education. I work in the medical field so am more knowledgable than a lay person, perhaps, but I am stumped on this one. No major problems till three days ago... Occasionally, I will fail to chew something completely, and I vomit till the blockage is up. Doesn't happen often. Three days ago, something got really stuck and I couldn't even keep down water. I threw up many times and quite violently until finanlly out popped a piece of red pepper about the size of my pinky nail. No problems afterwards. But now, I feel like I swallowed a golf ball and it is right below the center of my sternum. Anything I drink causes much more than normal burping. (I have a small hernia right there, but it's never caused any problems.) But what concerns me is that I don't feel full after eating my normal tv dinner sized meal. And things are staying down. I wonder if somehow I ripped the stitches across the bottom of the pouch. My family doctor is clueless about bypass, and any questions over the years were always referred to a surgeon. And forget the ER, I have to be near death before I would consider that. Any theories as to what could be going on down there? Nothing hurts, just a wierd feeling that I swallowed a golf ball.....

Topic: 5+ yrs out and 2 kids later
Hi my name is Deanna I have been a part of obesityhelp since 2001, and had gastric bypass surgery Dec 2001, I lost apx 145 pnds during the first year+ and in may of 2004 had my first son and in Jan 06 had my 2nd son. I am wondering if there are any others out there this far out and also who have had kids after having lost the weight? I am fluctuating between 145-148, but my goal is to get back down to 130-135 which I am finding hard to do, I do not have energy which im seeing a dr for I just had a lot of blood work done, im just soo tired and my two boys are a handful...I can almost eat a normal serving now depending on the food. What are your weight stats as of 5 yrs out and what should they be? I do not think I am doing to bad considering but I need to know if my thinking is bad or not?? and the profile is all messed up i just dont get it i liked the old way that it was ... somehow i will need to fix it up . thanks Deanna
