Surgery 11/9/09 home since Wed
Just a quick update to you all who have upcoming surgeries.
I had surgery 11/9/09, i was in pain initially right after I awoke in recovery but that's because they were trying to get the dose right of pain meds. It didn't take long at all and I kept drifting in and out anyway. When I got to my room my mom explained that they found I had a hiatal hernia and they fixed it along with doing the RNY. Who knew I had a hernia and didn't even know!
They equipped me with a pain pump that would give me a dose of morphine every time I hit the button (every 8 min) which really helped alot on the pain however you will find that the gas pain is really worse the the surgery pain. Walking is the only thing that helped it. I didn't wal****il later that night and when I got back to the room i became really nausaus but nurse gave me a shock in my IV that was just fine. Next day I felt a better, still had gas pain, I walked a good long ways and felt fine. Doc came to visit me every day that I was in. I was told that my potassium was low preop so before they would like me go I had to get two bags of potassium. So I didn't leave till around 6:30 wed night. I asked the doc for pain meds before leaving until I could get my family to fill my prescriptions and it worked wonderffully. The pain meds that I am on now work well and I have been sipping but the gas pains have had me up early in the morning pacing the halls. Make me want to limit my fluid intake which we all know is bad. Finally I discovered if I lay a heating pad on minimum heat on my tummy (over clothes) the gas would loosen and I could burp ALOT more easily..thus nowhere near the amount of gas I was experiencing. I have built up to taking in 46oz of water so far and I am working on protein. At this point it sits hard as a rock in my tummy and doc told me it was ok to just focus on fluids for now.
On a good not I came out of the hospital weighing the same as I did at my preop consult with the doc 2 weeks before. Since Wed when I got out however I have lost 10lbs. Pain at this point is easily managed.
Just wanted to update you all and wish all the preops a blessed surgery...I certainly had one!!
