Hi.. I did not have a calorie restriction... just a restriction on what I should and shouldn't be eating. I did not have a liquid diet requirement. I changed my way of eating and lost 50 lbs... twice what my Dr. wanted. But if your dr. requires it then a liquid diet should consist of at least 3 protein shakes a day. Most are low calorie... the one I drink is 30gm of protein, 1grm of sugar and 3gm of carbs and 160 calories. (premier brand at costco)  Drinking the liquids for 2 weeks prior shrinks the liver and makes surgery easier for the Dr. to perform, but does nothing to help you learn how to eat post op. There are a lot of Drs. out there that just do surgery after surgery without euducating their patients on proper eating for the rest of your life. The surgery is just a tool... it is not magic... its effects will diminish if it is not used properly.  I hope you are getting nutritional counseling along with your program. This is as much a mental change as it is a physical one. Without both success  will be difficult.  I don't mean to be harsh or assumptive, but I am just so passionate about this... I don't want any of us to have had this surgery only to be disappointed 2 or 3 years out.
Good Luck with your liquid diet... it will be tough, but you don't need anywhere near 1800 calories. Getting in the nutrition is more important than the calories!! Best of Luck to you with your surgery... its the first step in an incredible life-long journey!

Hi! I am 2 weeks out too.  I think the best advice is to just keep sipping tha****er and get your protein in any way you can.  I add protein powder to everything!!  Even my protein shake gets extra protein added in.  I have to remind myself to eat because I'm never hungry... for the first time in my life I have to eat to live... instead of living to eat!!!  Make sure you take your vitamins too...  the first few weeks are the hardest.... but everybody says it gets better from here on out!  Good Luck on your journey!!

Debbi

Hi Angie... I'm glad you are home and feeling better.  I too had a lot of pain and swelling on my left side.  I didn't tolerate the broth or the Isopure in the hospital very well either.  I didn't vomit, but had horrible liquid diarrhea.  I was in the hospital 5 days too.. and felt soooo much better once I got home and started eating blended soup and my protein shakes.  It is hard to get it all in, but it does get better with time.  Just remember.. to sip sip sip tha****er... I have been dehydrated a couple of times and it just makes you feel crappy and not want to eat or anything... and we don't need that!  My doc said 4 weeks out minimum... not negotiable.  Im on my feet all day too, and lifting and restraining animals. (im a vet tech) So take the time off...  you need the rest and time to fully recover!  Good Luck and take care!!

This is how it was explained to me from my nutritionist ... when you drink while you eat all you are doing is pushing the food down into the intestine before it is ready and therefore making more room in your pouch so you don't feel full when you are supposed to and end up eating more.

I have not been put on vitamins yet so I can't help you there, sorry. I'm on pureed food right now and haven't had any trouble tolerating food. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck to you.
