catheda! i think i spelled it right!lol

hi all im getting the lap band on 11/25/08  i heard some one mention getting a catheda (TUBE TO URINATE ) do you know if that is normal routine if so ouchhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! oh no please no  thanks for feed back

From what I understand, it is pretty routine to get a catheter. I have heard some people complain that it is uncomfortable. I have spina bifida and must use a catheter every time I urinate, so I'm more used to it. It doesn't hurt at all - some people say it makes them feel like they have to go constantly, but if you just relax, it is no big deal!

yes but i am male , i think not sure but it might be a lil more painfull for men  ya think!              thanks !

My ex-father in law had back surgery which rendered him incontinent. He, too, has to void with a catheter several times a day. I never really talked to him about it, but I can't imagine it was too painful - then again, who knows?

Urinary catheters are a usual during surgery to make sure your bladdeer remains empty, especially if your surgery is done laproscopically. They need to have your bladder empty so it doesn't get in the way while they are doing the surgery. This decreases the chances of nicking your bladder while working on your intestines.
I just had surgery on Monday and they put the catheter in after I was asleep and took it out in the recovery room before I really knew what was going on. I just barely remember having it and that is because i wanted to keep it awhile longer.
You won't even notice it.
Also as a nurse who has inserted and taken out thousands of catheters it really isn't worse for men than women. While a man has a much longer urethra it is easy to find. It is not always that easy on a female. TBI? sorry.
