Hello everyone, I just got word yesterday that my insurance company accepted the surgery.  I am so excited.  If I could have,  I would have had the surgury done today, but unfortunately the first open surgery date is on 12/11 so I still have to wait almost another month.  I have a question.  I've heard that I could return to work in 1 week while others said that it takes at least 2 weeks.  I work in an office so it's not awfully strenuous.  Were any of you able to go back to work after 1 week?

Good Luck on your surgery!! First of all I would ask which surgery are you having?? I had a laproscopic RNY on Monday. Even tough I am virtually pain free today, I get tired very easy. i am also fighting pain meds withdrawl headaches. I teach school and had been told that being out about a week and a half would be fine since I can get up as I need and sit down as needed and go to the bathroom, etc.... I had planned to go back to work next Thursday but am now considering waiting until the following Monday just to make sure. I think it all depends on the person and how much stress you are under at work.

I'm 5 days out and I just spent the day from 10:30am till 4:30 pm at an arena watching my kids play hockey. Between games I went to the grocery store to buy food and sat with my family in a restaurant while they had lunch and I had soup.  I've been up since 7 and it's now 8pm and I've not taken a nap.
I found as long as I was able to sit or move around I was fine. Standing still kills me!!!  It makes my heart beat out of my chest.
Everyone is different. If you can sit all day or be moving, then maybe it'll be ok after 1 week.
Again, that's assuming you have it done laparoscopic.
On the other hand, I can't lift anything over 5lbs for 6 weeks.
Talk to your surgeon and see what he recomends.

I had Gastric Bypass on the 29th of October and I also work in a office.  I went back after 2 weeks and that is because my blood pressure went very low.  I worked three days only half days, but now I stay all day.  It depends how much you can stand sitting all day.  It was hard at first, but you do get tired quickly.  Today is the first day that I feel pretty good.  The gas pain is finally leaving, it is has been hard for me to get in all the liquids and proteins you are suppose to every day. Good Luck and God Bless.  It is well worth it.  I have lost 30 pounds already, so I am very pleased.
