Hello everyone,

I am having lap-band on 11/24 and I am going back and forth between emotions of excitement and nervousness.  I am 266 and 5'6", ready to ge this journey underway.  I gave up caffiene and pop about a week or so ago, that was so hard.  I am drinking tons of water and am gradually feeling better.  I started taking all the vitamins, but I'm not used to it yet.  I keep missing doses.  I got my medicine evaluation back from the pharmisicist and I freaked out!  It says that I may not be able to absorb my medicine and that I should use the barrier metod in addition to birth control.  UGGGHHH!  Okay I am not just complaining about an inconvience here, I am allergic to latex.  I have to have be ther first surgery of the day, because I react so much the doctor can't even touch me after having a glove on earlier that day.  What am I going to do!?!  HAs anyone been told this?  Help!  I can't go on depo again, the weight gain from that helped get me where I am today.

I believe there are other options like the patch or an IUD. Talk to your primary care Dr. or who ever has given you birth control pills before. Good Luck, Teri

I've decided to get an IUD.  My surgeon suggested my OB insert it while I'm under for RNY.  So, that's the plan.  I have heard you should be on two forms of BC. My surgeon doesn't want you getting pregnant until at least 18 months post op.

I'm allergic to latex as well. I am also on the pill. My surgeon said that I will have no problem absorbing my pill. Which makes me really happy because I can't have an IUD due to an ectopic pregnancy and a ruptured tube last year. My only other option (besides tubes tied and hysterectomy) is the one they put in your arm (used to be norplant, can't remember what the new one is). Anyway, i guess different surgeons say different things.

you could also try www.safesense.com They sell no latex condoms. If your doctor really feels an additional barrier method should be used, they could be an option. I don't think I have ever seen them in the stores, only online.

I forgot ... there is also the depo shot. I was on it before my pill and loved it because I never got a period, but I get a very unusual side affect from it that my dr never heard of anyone else having.

I was on the shot for two years or so, had hge wieght gain and migraines and had to stop.  Sounds like alot of people are using iud's, that kinda of scares me though.  I have a pre-op appointment with my surgeon on 11/11, I will ask him about the absoption thing.  What kind of surgery did you have?  I am having a lap-band, I wonder if the type of bariatric surgery makes a difference for this.  Thanks for your help and encouragement!

-Readyto Bloom With the lap-band you shouldn't have a problem because you still absorb everything (or so that's what I was told), you just can't eat as much. I'm having the RNY on Tuesday, which takes out part of my intestines which is where the malabsorption comes in.

VSG on 11/25/08 with
Mirena IUD- it has only local effects, not systematic like pill, lasts 5+years, I have had NO periods since 2005 AND it is MORE effective than having your tubes tied, but completely reversible. I will never go back!
