I'm taking 5 weeks off. Not because I really think I need that much time, but because I knew I wanted an extra week or so off work .... I haven't had a vacation in 2 years because I've been hording my time off so I could have surgery. I could probably gone back to my desk job at 3 weeks, but I'm happy I took 5.
For a nurse... seems like you'd need some extra time since it's just a physical job.

Hi gail-
I had surgery on Nov 1st. Open RNY- my surgeon said 6-8 weeks. Its been 3 weeks yesterday... I am NOT ready to go back to work. I am just starting to be able to sleep almost through the night... I have severe restless leg- but when I take my meds I vomit. and this is not a goood feeling. I am planning on taking the entire 8 weeks off so far, UNLESS by some strike of luck, this tiredness ends just like that.... ha ha ha I am a Licensed Envoronmental Health Practitioner (aka health inspector + much more) for 2 local villages.... 1 full time and the other very part time... so I know when I get back to work it'll be at full steam... I may consider going back before the holidays.... if I feel ALOT better, less TIRED and rested... but in all honesty... probably not. Please let me know what you decide and how you are doing. I am willing to be a sounding board or just someone to commiserate with... .
Take care and heal well!

It sounds like you're doing pretty good. I also get tired easily, but it's just a matter of sitting down and relaxing for a bit.
I also don't get hungry, and I also don't feel full after I eat --- or at least I haven't figured out what it feels like when I've eaten enough. But my nutritionist gave me an hour-by-hour schedule for the entire day of when to eat, when to drink water, etc. and it's been a total godsend for me. I've put the schedule into my PDA and set alarms throughout the day ... so it is keeping me on track. I just had an alarm go off telling me it was time to drink 8 oz. of water. If I didn't have the schedule, I'd be totally lost.
As for being emotional. Yes, that's absolutely normal and it will continue --- it's just something you'll need to get used to and figure out how to deal with. Fat cells are primarily made up of hormones (estrogen) and when we rapidly lose weight those hormones are released into our bodies. So with all those hormones floating around it's common to have drastic mood swings, depression and extreme happiness. So the sooner we recognize why it's happening, the sooner we can deal with it. To me, it's good news when I get all moody -- mean's I'm losing weight.

Topic: RE: New Losers ---- How are you doing so far?
Hi Pam-
I am 3 weeks out yesterday. I am doing pretty good so far. I just cannot tell when I am hungry or full. I eat when I seem to get light headed or a headach. Probably 2-3-4 times a day. My surgeon had us on clear liquids for 10 days, then day 10-14 we could add a protein drink. Day 14 to 28 are a combination clear, full and pureed foods. The pureed are like carrots, greeen beans, hot cereals (YUK), yogurt, SF custards/puddings ect. I have only lost 15 #'s since the 1st of Nov, but then again, I am not doing much, and not really eating much anyway. I had open rny on Nov 1st. My emotions are all over the place... I am sooooo tearful... anything just about can make me cry. I hear this will pass soon. I HOPE SO> other than that... I didn't have any drainage tubes or staples. My incision is about 4.5 inches long, with dissolvable stiches. I think I have ONE regular stitch because its still there. I am not in any pain, and can get around pretty well. The only thing I was not prepared for is how EXTREMEMLY TIRED I AM ALL THE TIME! But I can't seem to sleep during the day. I try to just sit and rest by watching TV but I have no patience... i feel good so my mind says to get out and do something, but my body says 'oh no.... not yet...' aghhh...
but overall, I guess I am doing pretty good....
Please let me know how you are getting along.... what are you going through?
thanks
sue

Congratulations on your surgery. I'm so glad that you're feeling good and doing well with the liquids. I totally understand what you mean about the sore throat - how annoying is that?!
Yes, we've all got lots to be thankful for today and I didn't miss the big meal either.
Happy Thanksgiving!

The best (and easiest) way to find out if your insurance covers the surgery is to call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask. Even someone who has PHCS surgery could have a totally different policy since each employer negotiates their own contract for insurance coverage.
Hope that helps,
Pam
Topic: Post Surgery
Well, the day has come and the day of surgery has gone!! Gone very well, I might say. I had surgery on the 20th of November and all has gone very smooth. I had expected a lot of discomfort, but I have experienced very little. The most discomfort I have felt is in my throat from the tube placed there during surgery.
I am on my second day of clear liquids and all is doing fine. I would hope the rest goes as well, but I'm sure there are rough spots other there some where.
Its Thanksgiving Day and even though I'm not having a great big meal, or a small one for that matter, I have a lot to be thankful for. May you all have a Happy Thanksgiving and be especially be thankful for what we have to share and give to each other.
