Fibromyalgia and RNY Surgery
Hi Connie:
I don't have fibromyalgia, but I had a former boss who did, so I know how much suffering you have to endure with that.
I've done a ton of research on RNY and all the ailements to go away after WLS ... but I can't recall reading anything about fibro. Sorry.
I just did a quick Google search with the phrase "fibromyalgia after weight loss surgery" and came up with a few references that looks like there is dramatic improvement in symptoms. I didn't dig much deeper than glancing at the results, but it would be worth some research. Sounds promising.
Good luck,
Pam
Hi Connie,
I also have severe firbomyalgia and have my Lap RNY scheduled for December 5th at Parkwest in Knoxville with Dr. Stephen Boyce. Along with the fibro I have sleep apena {use C-PAP} diabietes, some arthritis and have been treated with large amounts of steriods over the last ten years. I have Systemic Lupus but it has been in a remissive state for over five years now. Considering all my health issues I am pretty anxious about the surgery. I have read so many stories on OH that have helped me learn more info for pre and post-op questions. I too would love to hear from others who have had this surgery and how it has affected their fibro either for the good or even adversely. I just feel like I'd cope better with situations post-op the better informed I am. Do you have a surgery date, and if so, when? I would love to hear form you. We simply must believe that the surgery will give us a better quality of life than we now have. Keep the faith and let me hear from you.
Brenda
Hi Brenda,
I am so so excited to hear from you...someone that knows what is going on. I too have other issues, Lyme Disease, Epstein Barr, and I sleep w/CPAP too. I had Rhuematoid Arthritis but it has been in remission for about 6 years now and let me tell you, people think RA is so painful...and it is...BUT my fibro is at least 10 times more painful...barely being controlled with 30mg Ms Contin 3 times daily and 10/500 Lortab every 4-hours. So I am so hoping that this surgery will at least relieve some pain. I have to get the RNY because of my severe GERD. My surgeon said that with the Lap Band my GERD would get worse and with the RNY it would be completely gone. So, that made my decision right there. I don't have my surgery date yet, but it is approved by my insur. and I am in the process of getting the other requirements done like the pysch eval, etc. So, yes...most definitely we must keep in touch and reach out to other Fibro sufferers and let them know our experiences. Thanks for contacting me...I so appreciate it.
Connie
Hello;
I was told a long time ago I had fibromyalgia but truly doubted it. I later went to a Rheumatologist, and he said I has severe osteoarthritis. I have taken pain meds every day for the pain. Since I have had my surgery three weeks ago tomorrow (11/1/07) I have not taken one pain pill and I do not hurt. I walk easier as well as move with ease. It is a thrill too. I know life will be so much better now.
