Britt, Corinna, Deidrah, Shawn and I chatted tonight. Shawn, sorry you left early. You guys know I'm never brief and concise but I'll try! We mainly discussed Chapter 3 of the Beck book entitled "How Thin People Think" and how we might possess characteristics that make dieting difficult for us, such as: - Confusing hunger with the desire to eat - Having a low tolerance for hunger and cravings - Liking the feeling of being full - Fooling ourselves about how much we eat - Feeling hopeless and helpless when we gain - Comforting ourselves with food - Feeling it's unfair we can't eat what we want - Stopping the diet when we lose weight. One topic that we kept returning to was PLANNING and the importance of PLANNING! - Planning WORKS if you take the time. - Planning helps us deal with temptations and cravings - Planning keeps us accountable - Planning helps build the "resistance muscle" - Planning = a foundation for success Britt said: "Success is a marvelous feeling." We all agreed that sometimes we have to just hang on minute by minute! Dealing with our relationship with food is tough but we have to realize: Hunger and cravings are not emergencies!!! We can distract ourselves, reason with ourselves, etc). My note here: When we eat, the book points out we are NOT truly out of control, we MAKE A DECISION. We rationalize! So, think of a child having a temper tantrum. Reason with that child. List the reasons you don't want to eat that food and later you will have that "marvelous feeling" Britt was talking about! Build on the successes! -Stay in the moment -Be Proud -PLAN -Share successes and slip ups -Commit! -Be Consistent -Don't give in to sabotaging thoughts IT MATTERS EVERY SINGLE TIME we make poor choices. EVERY BITE MATTERS. Be conscious of what you eat and why! Britt also mentioned a recent article in OH magazine that said something like this: RNY was not designed to allow you to feel full quicker, it was designed to allow you to be satisfied quicker. And: Eating until full will results in needing more food to give you that same feeling. That hit me because I know I can be satisfied with less food but I too often go past satisfaction to full. Next assignment: Pages 53-95, doing the exercises. Next Chat: 7/9 9pm Eastern. Yahoo Messenger. CeCe

Soooo sorry I had to leave... I just could not follow with the way my messenger was jumping back to the top every time someone made a comment... I just couldn't keep scrolling back down fast enough to read... I really really wanted to be there... I am soooooo bummed that I had to leave the chat... I was really looking forward to it and was all caught up with my reading (and I HATE reading).... I wish there were someway that I could figure it out so that it doesn't scroll back up like that... I thought it was because I use a MAC but I think I remember some one else uses a MAC and I don't think they have that problem... I dunno.... I will have to play with it I guess... I tried messing with settings during the chat but it didn't seem to make a difference.... If anyone has any suggestions I am up for them and will try them.... HUGs to all, Shawn M.
