I guess opera singer really are fat for a reason
So I decided to figure out how many calories I burn when I sing (since it sure feels like a workout after singing for an hour) and I discovered several references to this study. Because I sing I produce too much of the hormone that pays no attention to how much fat my body stores and the body becomes resistant to it which can cause weight gain. The key phrase there is "can cause". But still...how annoying is that?? Of course I can't claim it made me fat since I was already well on my way when I started

Corinna,
Don't you just love it when science tries to give us excuses for being overweight. You know the one I hated recently was the one that said if your friends were overweight, you were more likely to be. I wonder if that actually broke up friendships? You know I could just imagine some skinny b$tch deciding she'd better avoid her pudgy friend!!
Leptin may have something to do with it but, like everything else, it's a combination! I'm sure going out for extended dinners following performances and sleeping til 2 had plenty to do with Pavarotti's girth and many others!

Oh totally. Pavarotti loved to eat and made no excuses for it. There is one story about a famous wagnerian soprano (who is quite large) who took the whole roasted chicken that was going to be used as a prop that night and ate the whole thing before the performance. The prop master found the carcass hidden behind her costumes after the show. Opera singers in particular have said for years that they "must" be big in order to make the big sounds they do. Well, Debra Voigt who is one of the top wagnarian sopranos today (which is the biggest singing you can possibly do) had WLS, lost almost all her extra weight and guess what...she still singing the big stuff and can still be easily heard over the orchestras at the big houses she's always sung in. No more excuses!!!
Honestly, most of my friends for most of my life have all had weight issues. Some of us more than others but with few exceptions we have all been morbidly obese. I think it's that like is attracted to like, especially in friendships, it was always hard to be around my skinny friends who could do so much more, never had to worry about fitting in a chair, going for a hour long bike ride and not being exhausted, going out and being the only one guys didn't talk to. The list goes on and on. The reality was my skinny friends never really noticed that I wasn't like them...I mean they knew, but they didn't care. It was always me that cared and worried about it.
Man, do we mess ourselves up or what?
