OT? Reoccurring UTI
Have any of you had any problems with urinary tract infections since WLS? I was very prone to them years ago but I learned to control them with drinking lots of water, keeping sodas to a minimum and making sure to urinate frequently (even without the urge) Now, the past three months or so I seem to constantly have symptoms of a UTI. I will admit that I am the worlds worst at "self diagnosis and self medicating" I know I need to go to my doc and see what she says. I was just wondering if anyone else is/was experienceing anything like this. My brain is always searching for a reason behind everything. My thoughts were, maybe the fat or something else that is excreting through urine is causing bacteria in my urinary tract??? I know that is probably really reaching but I just don't understand it. I drink a minimum of 128 oz of water per day. 1 cup of coffee, maybe but not everyday. No soda and sometimes a green tea. I can't see where anything should be causing this.
What are your thoughts? Is anyone else having this problem? I am puzzled.
Thanks,
Valorie
I had three in a row near the beginning of the year. Antibiotics worked for a while, then I'd get it again after a week or two. They were almost ready to put me on antibiotics prophylactically.
I don't know what caused them. I thought it had something to do with WLS too, but I never did find out. I used to be prone to UTI's when I was younger too.
The one's I had this time, though, were very different for me. I didn't have many symptoms. But the numbers were sky high. They expected I'd be in extreme pain, but I wasn't. So I think I just waited a long time to get it treated the first couple of times. By the third time, I got wise and went in earlier. Then it seemed to clear up.
My symptoms seem to hit all of sudden. No pain only extreme urge and the goose bumps come afterwards. I have taken (I say taken because I didn't go to the Doc, I self medicated) macrodantan 2 times and even Cipro (which usally knocks out any king of UTI) twice also. I keep Cystex (otc- medication that helps with the urgency) on hand at all times. I need to make the trip to the doctor's office. I just hate it because it usually takes about 3 hours of my time. I go to one of those urgent medical/family practice places that is 1st come 1st serve. The good thing is they are open 7 days per week till 8 pm. So, you see I really don't have an excuse.
Thanks,
Val
Valorie,
When I read about your UTI yesterday, I just about knocked on wood because I've had numerous UTI's since my hysterectomy. I'm very suggestable but I still think it is a coincidence that today I was at the ER for hours with a UTI!!!!!!!!! I'm sure the ER doc wouldn't have known if WLS patients have more UTIs so I didn't ask - I just wanted to get my meds and leave - but it's something we should ask our surgeons! Hope you are all better now!
I used to get them quite often, and even ended up with a kidney infection from one. I just yesterday realized that I am having some symptoms of another one. So Im getting ready to call my DR before it gets any worse. My question though is... What meds do you take for it post op. I havent swallowed pills since surgery.. Only birth control. And I take childrens chewable tylenol for a headache. So what is safe to take???
thanks!!
