How much protein can we absorb at one time? I have had Gastric Bypass (RNY) surgery and am trying to make sure I get adequate protein. I am drinking a protein drink in the morning consisting of 16 oz of lactose free skim milk (16 gms protein) and two scoops of Unjury protein powder (whey protein isolate) 20 gms each with a total of 56 grams of protein at one time. Can I absorb all of that at one sitting?? If not, what is the maximum amount at a time? Thank you for your help. Connie A. Protein absorption depends on the type of protein and not the amount eaten per meal. We absorb about 95% of the animal proteins we eat but we absorb less protein from plant sources, around 85%. If you eat more protein than you need, that protein is used as energy and any extra protein is stored as fat.

I was told by a person at one of my support meetings that we can only absorb like 25 grams at a time. I havent asked my doctor & dont know for sure though!

I asked my NUT that question and was told 15 to 20g at a time. If you are doing 56 at one time you are wasting money. We need to wait a couple of hours and do another 15 or 20. I drink half of the New Whey Liquid 42g at a time. Or I make a protein drink and cut it in half. Hope this helps
