B Vitamins?
Hi all...I had my surgery Nov 27th, however, I was never told to start taking B Vitamins. All I was told was to take 2 childrens chewable vitamins? Is this something I should be checking in to? Was everyone directed to take b? I guess it helps with giving us energy? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Holly
Holly,
I was never told either to take B vitamins.... I take my children's multi's and my calcium and that is it... I had blood drawn a couple weeks ago and all is fine... if you need B-12 it will show up in blood work... same with iron, at least in the blood work my surgeon orders... Unless they tell you to take it, I would hold off until you hear from them... if you have questions about it, then I would direct them to a nutritionist or your surgeon's office...
For me, I have found when I do take B-12 (pre-surgery), I have trouble sleeping, no matter what time of day I take it... I have enough problems sleeping without it, so I don't want to add it unless my doctor tells me I need to. Good Luck and let us know what you find out...

i was never told to take it per say ...Just to make sure i got my labs done on time ...Well finally after a year i had to be put on B12 shots and i take them about two to three times a month ....but you can take suplements until you get your labs...B vitamins will not hurt you at all the will just give you energy ..or your body will just absorbe it from what my doc told me ..you can not over dose on B12 or anything like that in the B family

Holly,
In COMPLETE contrast to what everyone else has said my surgeon is a MAJOR proponent of taking not only B12 but also a B50 complex. I take 1000mg of B12 (liquid) three times a week and a B50 complex (powder mixed in tiny bit of water) daily in addition to one adult multi vitamin, 1000 mg of Calcium (broken in half taken twice because your body can only absorb 500 mg at a time) and iron twice a day (make sure you don't take the iron and calcium at the same time because they won't be absorbed...they work against each other if taken at or near the same time). He is an absolute stickler. I didn't start the iron until one month out but everything else I started immediately after surgery. You certainly aren't going to hurt yourself taking the extra vitamins and if it helps down the road then that's got to be a good thing. Plus if you wait until it shows up in your blood work it means you are really low and then you have to play catch up. I feel like it's better to get into the habit now then have to do it later when it's become extremely important because your body is low on it.
Anyway that's my two cents (and my surgeon's).
