just discovered this board....
I normally read the main board and I just happened to stumble across this one. I am 3 and a half weeks post op. I kinda feel like a failure because I have only lost 24 lbs. I know if I exercise more, the weight will come off quicker, but 10 mins on the treadmill and I fell like I'm gonna die. Also, I cannot stand the protein shakes so the only protein I am getting is coming from the cheese and yougurt I eat. That is in no way enough protein. I dont want my hair to start falling out. Any suggestions or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You are not a failure! Twenty-Four pounds is great! I had my surgery 11/13/06. I've only lost 14 pounds since surgery day--a total of 26 if you include the pre-op diet. I wi**** were quicker but I'm OK with it. I need to exercise more too and I will once this irritating G-tube is removed on the 20th. Think of it this way--when is the last time you lost 24 pounds? And isn't it comforting to know that it is lost forever! I have followed my diet exactly and even though the weight loss is slow I feel like each pound that leaves me will never come back. As far as your protein goes have you tried Isopure? There is 40 grams of protein in a 20 ounce bottle. You can't absorb 40 grams all at once but it usually takes most of the day to drink it so it's fine. It taste like a cool-aide drink. You can get it at GNC. Also, I like to put a little chocolate protein powder in my cream of wheat. You can try the unfavored Unjury protein powder that you can mix in anything, especially soups. Take a look at the bariatriceating.com site. I bought some protein pudding and the protein oatmeal. All of the protein stuff is a little pricey but we aren't eating the volume that we used to so we can splurge. If you can stand to down an ounce or two of protein instead of nursing a protein shake GNC has a liquid and also there is Prostat or Prosource. Just hold your nose and get it down. My dietitian said that biotin is important to prevent hair loss. I found it in liquid form at Amazon.com.
Welcome to the November board! Have you tried some of the unflavored protein powder like the Whey Unflavored Protein from GNC? I use this and make up my own protein shake by using sugar free pudding, crushed ice, vanilla flavoring and skim milk. You cant even tell that the powder is in there. You are FAR from a failure by losing 24 lbs. Thats a fantastic number. I think we all just get a little over anxious and want the pounds to melt away quicker. Patience is something that I need to practice myself! lol
THank you guys for yur suggestions. We do have a GNC here but the guy that works there looked at me like I was an idiot when I asked about Isopure. We live in a small town so he probably just doesnt know what he's taking about. I have to go for my 1-month check up next week in St Louis so I will try and find it there. I am on a mission now! Thanks guys

Hi Cori, We must have had surgery around the same time. I am down 28 pounds but have remained the same weight for the past week, so I was thinking what am I doing wrong? Then last night I read an article on the exercise message board "Those Darn Plateaus", and this paragraph really spoke to me: "Sometime in this first six weeks, the weight loss will stop for a while. That is just your body readjusting--that is all....A readjustment period for the body is necessary. During the postoperative time, you not only lose weight from fat cells, but also from what we call "lean body mass". To me that says that things are "shifting" in my body, and I don't want to lose muscle for the sake of a higher weight loss number! I just have to trust that this path will finally lead to success, even though I've been down so many paths that lead to failure. This time is genuinely different! We're going to do it! Linda
