Good afternoon everyone, my surgery will be Monday morning, November 6 @ 8:00 am in Asheville. I am going out to our local GNC in Asheville, NC does anyone have a suggestion as to the best protein drink/powder I should purchase?

I love Isopure, and it has 50 grams of protein. Good luck with your surgery! Mine is on the 13th.

I also love the Isopure but have tried a few that I didn't like. It's really all in your taste. Of course saying this, after surgery I may hate it!! Michelle

Congrats on your surgery date! We have the same date. I hope your surgery goes well and your recovery is quick. I just went to the GNC store and bought the Whey Unflavored Protein Powder. Thats what the guy recommended. He said he had lots of surgery people that comes in to buy it. It cost me 27.99 plus tax. Thats a bit high so I hope it works well for me.

I bought Unjury to take with for my weeklong stay in Las Vegas. I have been doing a bunch of reading and I guess it makes a difference what kind of whey protein you get as to how well it's absorbed. I never knew this. So you want to look for Whey ISOLATE, not whey concentrate. And not collegen whey, which comes from pigs and cows hoofs, skin, and connective tissue. I guess that's only absorbed at about 17% as compared to nearly 100% with the whey isolate. The isolate is pre-digested so it absorbs easier. I have some Profect coming, but I just got this e-mail that tells it has the concentrated whey. So I won't get as much in. Also, I read where someone said that you only can absorb up to 35g of protein per hour. So drinking anything over that is of no use. Of couse, I don't know WHAT to believe. There seems to be alot out there. Don't kno*****liable the sources were, but wanted to share the info in case you want to do some research on your own.

I really really like Protein Delight Chocolate Coconut. It tastes like Mounds bar and doesn't have a weird smell or aftertaste. It's relatively cheap, too. Also, try BeneProtein and just add it to anything....it's tasteless like BeneFiber or UnJury and you can add it to your soup or jello or whatever you'll be eating during your different diet phases. It's only 6 grams of protein, but 6 grams in everything you eat will end up being substancial and it adds protein to everything you eat. I've tried the Isopure RTD (ready-to-drink) and the powder...they're good for the amount of protein you get but for some people it's way too sweet, but you have to realize that you only assimilate so many grams of protein (dependant on your body weight and exercise), the rest turns to waste and having too much excess can be harmful to your kidneys. That would have to be a huge amount though...something like 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (I know I couldn't eat 270 grams of protein...lol). Isopure has 50 grams of protein in two scoops...my nutritionist recommends making a large serving of the Isopure and then drinking it through out the day because two scoops and the liquid you mix it with will be too much to drink in one sitting. In addition to the fact that you don't assimilate 50 grams of protein in one sitting. However, my pysical trainer says that you should never pre-mix any protein drink because whey protein can breakdown, which is not harmful just not beneficial. I'm not too sure who's advice I'd take...lol...but that's just what I've been hearing. =) Good luck with surgery! Dana

I love Hanks, but am still preop. Everyone keeps telling me your tastes change after surgery... I'm hoping I still like this one, as it's my favorite!!!

My Dr. recommends the Metagenics products. I'll hear more Thursday at my preop appointment. Alan Wittgrove pioneered the lap RNY and has performed thousands of them. He's the one surgeons go to to study and send their family members to have RNY. So, I've got to trust what he says. I had heard Bariatric Advantage was good as well as Unjury unflavored to add protein. Of course this is from a local support group and OH. Kim
