It's starting to feel real now..
I went to my pre-op seminar yesterday and got all my paperwork and stuff for surgery on the 13th...whew it's starting to get close! I don't have a pre-op diet and I am only on clear liquids for the hospital stay...however I am on mushies ("no lumps/no chunks diet") for 6 weeks!!!! How am I going to figure out how to eat soft and mushie foods for almost two months!!! I guess it's good that I can have SOMETHING during Thanksgiving...lol.
Wow..11 days and counting.

Dana,
I know what you mean about it all starting to feel real. I did all my stuff on Wednesday and it all really sank in then. I have to do an 8 day liquid diet before my surgery, but like you I only have the "clear" liquid diet while in the hospital then I get "full" liquids or mushies after I get home, for 2 weeks, then I see the dr. and can graduate from there. It was a lot to take in at the NUT class. Good Luck to you. Won't be long now.

Wow...I wonder if my doc is the only here on the November boards with no pre-op liquid diet??? I gotta ask him why he doesn't require a liquid diet...not that I'm complaining...lol.
My nutritionists seminar was sooooo long (almost 3 hours) and they made us take a test after. The test was easy and all but I'm kinda weary about the advice the nut gave us. I mean, she's not the regular I've been seeing these past few months (she's out on maternity) and the new one tells me that it's fine to pre-mix protein drinks and it's fine to drink a whole Isopure shake in one sitting. When I asked her about assimilation and denaturation regarding the protein shakes, she didn't really have an answer she kinda just skimmed over the subject. Then another person asked about drinking 1 pot (ONE POT!!!) of coffee a day after surgery...all the nut says is "ummm...i don't know for sure but maybe that's not a good idea." Okay...you want to drink maybe 40-50 ounces of coffee as your liquids throughout the day...that much caffine cannot be good for someone just out of surgery and prone to dehydration. I gotta talk to my doctor about her too.
Good luck on surgery!!!

Dana,
I would defintely talk to your doctor or a different NUT. That does not sound right at all. You are not supposed to mix protein drinks up in advance because they start to break down as soon as they are mixed and they loose their protien. Coffee???? Maybe some decaf, but a whole pot??? Doesn't sound right to me. Get another opinion. OH and about the liquid diet... is your surgery going to be open??? I know for open RNY, many doctors don't require the liquid diets. The purpose of that is to shrink the liver to get it out of the way for the lap. HTH.... Good Luck...

Yeahhhh!!! My surgery twin...lol. I could imagine how hard that clear liquid diet must be...but I guess it kinda evens out...I have mushies for 6 weeks but no pre-op diet. I'm gonna get myself on a pre-op liquid diet for a couple days before surgery though...I want to make sure my stomach is kinda cleared out by surgery.

I'm on a 2 week liquid diet (this is day 4) and I swear the only thing saving me from becoming homicidal is that I can have things like yogurt, applesauce and pureed soups.. and since you are on "mushees" then these soups will work for you too.. they are Campbell's Select Gold Label (in a box) and man are they good! Anyway, just a suggestion!
Best of luck!!!

I have found 5 flavors, there's a southwestern corn one (reminds me of creamed corn but better) a tomato (WAAAAAAY better than your typical canned tomato soup) a red pepper and black bean (my fav so far) a summer squash (surprisingly better tasting than I thought it would be) and a portabello mushroom (if you don't like mushrooms don't even think about this one!)
Anyway, not that I'm a commercial for them or anything.. LOL but like I said, I am eating two a day (one for lunch and one for dinner) and they are actually filling me up... without them I don't know how I'd survive this liquid phase!!!
I dont' see why we won't like soups after surgery... they are low in sugar and have protein (tho not tons of it)... I sure hope I still like them, but I know everyone is different in what we like or don't like..
Anyway, Best of luck!!!!
