Death by Pre-Op Diet, Help
I only had one day of clear liquid diet :barf:before surgery...I did that on the 22nd of October, and the surgery was the 23rd. Now it's nothing but broth, sf jello, sf popsicles and carnation instant breakfast shakes until the 16th:mad:. I feel your pain...mine's just reversed:juggle:. What's working for me is remembering that it'll be over soon and I'll reap the rewards in no time:jump:! Good luck and I'll be praying for you and everyone else that gets the surgery for a fast and healthy recovery!
P.S. Congrats on quitting smoking...if you can do that--you can do ANYTHING!
It is very interesting to see the different requirements that each of our surgeons has for the pre-op diet. My surgeon wants us on a one month milk diet before surgery. I can have skim milk 3 times a day, what you can drink in 5 to 10 minutes. I am allowed to use one scoop of protein powser once a day, as long as I am still losing weight. I am also to take 2 multivitamins a day. The only other thing I can have is suger-free non-calorie liquids, as long as the artificial sweeteners don't increase my appetite. I am on day 18, and have lost 11 pounds. I have been really surprised that it isn't harder for me than it is. I have even gone out to dinner with my family and some out of town relatives - I sat there and dran****d tea while they ate, then had my milk when I got home. I have about 3 cups each meal.
I don't like the Atkins shakes, either - I don't like the taste of soy protein, I like the whey protein. I have never tried Optifast. My doctor said the milk diet is kind of like Optifast, without the expense. My husband puts "tanker of milk" on the grocery list But I really haven't gotten hungry on this, which really surprised me. The first few days I wanted something to eat, but that was more habit than hunger.
Good luck to all of you on your pre-op diets! My surgery is November 17th - coming up before I know it!
Post-op I am supposed to be on clear liquids in the hospital, full liquids a couple of weeks after that, then pureed foods for 3 weeks. I figure that means I should be able to eat a little bit of real food by Christmas, if all goes well!
