OMG - Liquid Diet - Anyone Else Have Trouble?
My surgery is on Nov. 22 and I start my pre-op diet the week before. Liquids only. CLEAR liquids only. I decided that I would give a modified version of this a try beginning this week for just a few days to see what I'm in for. Oh My God. I COULDN'T DO IT!!! I decided I wouldn't count calories, I'd just stick to liquids for three days - and I wouldn't even stick to just clear liquids, I'd include Slimfast, creamy soups, etc. By the time lunch rolled around today, I'd given up. Thankfully, I made good choices at lunch (salad with one ounce of meat and steamed carrotts), but if I couldn't even go a day....ACK....what am I going to do when this is actually REQUIRED of me??? How in the world am I going to do one week pre-op and 2-3 weeks post-op of liquids only?
Part of the problem was I had a lunch meeting and I didn't want to have to explain. But I can't just hibernate at my house the week before surgery - work will be too busy then and, frankly, me alone in the house will just mean that I'll be TOTALLY fixated on food that I can't have. Better for me to be busy.
Has anyone else had trouble with this requirement? Do you have any secrets to share?
I just found out today that I start a liquid diet 8 days pre-op. They told me that they provide the "liquid". I am guessing it is a form of a slim-fast thingy. I just hope I can stomach them. I know many do this, we can too. Just think how good it will be to be thin and healthy and focus on that each time you have to eat/drink.
Good Luck to you.

Stephanie,
I know how important encouragement is or the lack of it, so I do my best to help cheer others on. I don't get anything from my family, and I know others don't either, so they come here. That is why we are all here, plus for information. Maybe all my cheering and jumpint will burn a few extra calories too. LOL.... Thanks....

Hi Stephanie,
my surgeon put me on a very low calorie diet (VLCD) for 2 weeks for surgery. I am on optifast. - You have 3 meal replacements shakes/chocolate bars/soups/desserts a day. but you can have some solids as well.
I have been having typically:
- shake + 1/2 cup strawberries for breakfast
- shake + sf jelly(or jello as you call it ) for lunch
- shake + 2 cups low starch vegetables for dinner
The first couple of days I had the most intense headaches - I dont normally get headaches
The next couple of days I felt so weak and tired it was unbelievable
I think I am coping with it ok now.
I think knowing that this is the last time I will have to do this with a 'normal' stomach helps and wanting to make sure that everything goes well in surgery also helps
but I do want to (everyday) have a big meal or bites of things I like and cant have.
Good Luck with yours!

Hi Quanita
What a cool name! Thanks for the inspiration and honesty - it's really appreciated.
I have some dear friends in Sydney and you've just given me a great idea - I think I'll treat myself to a visit with them once I reach my goal weight. Gail (my friend in Oz) will just FREAK if I walk off the plane 85 pounds thinner than the last time I saw her! Wouldn't that be fun?
Best,
Stephanie
