Topic: RE: Has anyone tried salads?
I've had several salads and have done ok so far. I've used iceberg, romaine (long time chewing though), carrots, onions, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and been ok. I also had some salad from Olive Garden last night and did ok there too. I also am a salad dressing lover and finding some with less than 2g of sugar can be hard. I found a ranch dressing from South Beach Diet that is good and low sugar. I have also used Tarragon vinegar mixed with some sweet n low for a sweet/sour type dressing. Christine

I've had apples and bananas. I became nauseous and sweaty immediately after eating strawberries, so I won't be doing that again! Christine

I'm loving it, too. I just finished a clementine. I had never eaten one before and it was wonderful. I've been eating an apple a day, trying to stay regular. I think fruit tastes better to me now than it did before surgery. No sushi for me! I lived on Okinawa from the age of 9 to 11 and we had to go to a potluck at my dad's church every month. All the Okinawan women brought gorgeous looking little cakes but when you would bite into them they were rice, raw fish, and seaweed. To be polite we had to try some of everything and I've never gotten over it. Didi

I've had several of them with no problems. Raw carrots, onions, and cucumbers haven't bothered me either. I don't do the fat free dressings because they usually are loaded with sugar. I just go extra light on regular dressing. Take it slow, enjoy, and keep in mind every dr. has a different protocol. Didi

Carla; As we've all said about 100 times, every surgeon and nutritionist is different, but mine doesn't ever recommend raw carrots and for the first 6 months, I'm not allowed to have skin on any vegetables or fruits. The nutritionist told me that the texture of carrots and veggie/fruit skins is difficult to chew enough to break down and they've had several occasions where a patient has gotten them stuck. I have tried a bite of shredded carrots, but for the most part I'm kind of afraid of them now. I haven't tried any veggie or fruit skins. I'm definitely afraid of those. Have you had any bad experiences with the carrots and cucumbers? Blessings, Jennifer

Bethany; So far I've only tried strawberries, but I haven't had any problem. I've not had sushi post-op. I've always liked sushi, but I didn't like the texture when I was chewing, so I would chew it very little, and I know that won't work post-op, so I've stayed away so far. I've been eating a lot of crab and getting tons of energy from that. It sounds like you're doing great! Keep it up. Blessings, Jennifer 253 / 200 / ???
